SOS! I don't know where to apply.

I have 4.0+ GPA, I’m Captain of the Debate Team, President of my own club, apart of the Math Team, Science Club, etc.
I’ve taken a multitude of AP Exams and have preformed well on them.
I plan on majoring in Biomedical Engineering (b/c it’s something I love and I’m extremely interested in).
The only problem is my SAT score. I got a 1840 the first time I took it.
Someone recommended the ACT to me, so I’ll be taking that in Oct.
I still need to figure out where to apply with the SAT score I got because it is the only standardized test score I have to go off of.
Any ideas on where I should apply? What colleges/universities can I get into with that score, but still be in an environment that offers me opportunities in my field?

P.S. I’d like to stay in the Northeast, but I’m open other locations.

Home state? How much can you and your family afford?

NY

You realize that you will only be able to take out loans in the amounts of $5500 for Freshman year, $6500 Sophomore year and $7500 Junior/Senior year. The rest would be up to your parents. I would ask now how much they are willing to contribute and get a set number before you apply to schools which are unaffordable.

Yes, I know. However, money aside; with that information, where would you recommend I apply to/ research?

I live in NY, and monetarily speaking my family income is low enough that I’ll be financially covered (so-to speak). Otherwise, I’d have to take out loans and pay for it on my own.

it doesn’t work that way. Most schools don’t give much aid and you can’t borrow that much money

I live in NY too and if you should look at Oswego if you want to stay in state, their research facility is amazing and it’s a really great school. You can get in with your grades just make sure you have a recommendation letter because all SUNY schools require at least one. I’m a senior and I’m applying there it’s my 2nd choice school but you should go to a SUNY fall fair, they’re having them in Seltember I can tell you when if you are interested in a SUNY. But they will all be there so you can see which one would best fit you. I also understand the whole financial situation I’m taking out loans too.

Thanks awkwardcity!
Any out of state schools you’d recommend?

Plus SUNY gives some of the highest aid in the country and they give it on need base and merit based and you qualify for both

True, thanks!

The only out of state schools I looked at seriously were penn state, U penn, U Michigan, Michigan state, Arizona state, UCLA, UCSB

If you need FA, do not consider UCLA/UCB since as an OOS applicant would be expected to pay at the minimum of $23K/year plus your EFC up to full pay at $55K/year. Little to no FA for OOS students.

What is your M+CR?

While out of state publics may give some merit awards, such as Ohio State gives 12k Buckeye, you still have to come up with all the rest. So you have to look at private schools where they may meet your need if your parents can pay their EFC. Have you run any calculators to see what schools will expect based on your income? As others are pointing out, there is no real school hunt without costs consideration, you are just wasting your own time, not to mention ours. So def pick some instate schools that are affordable and don’t gloss over them because that’s likely where you are going. Then look around.

President of your own club of 1? The club of Dan? How is it your own and no one else’s?

I have used those calculators to figure out costs and the price drops significantly for out of state schools. For example, if I were to apply to UCLA (which I’m not), the $51,564 (out of state tuition) drops to $9, 579.

When I said “president of my own club”, I meant I started it/ created it.

Have you used college boards college search its really good it lets you refine, by a lot

Have a look at the test optional schools http://fairtest.org/university/optional

Do test optional schools give grants to kids with average stats? If so, do they give enough to make them affordable to low income students?

I think you should seriously consider the SUNYs. They’re excellent schools at affordable prices. SUNY tuition at our cc’s is ~$4k/year and at the 4-year SUNY’s it’s ~$10k. Low income students can get up to $5k/year federal Pell grant and up to $5k NYS TAP (tuition assistance) grant (if they’re NYS residents). That, plus summer work earnings, could pay for a SUNY. And there’s always the ~$5500/year federal student loan that can be used to cover any gaps.

If you’re looking at SUNY’s, then U at Buffalo and Binghamton would be great choices for Biomedical.

As for out of state, Case Western is really well known for biomedical because there’s sooo many hospitals kitty corner to campus. The nursing and biomedical students get tons of research and internship opportunities at the hospitals and with the many medical students and professors on campus. Though it’s out in Ohio, It’s only like 5 hours from Rochester and 3.5-4 from Buffalo. If you’re from NYC, it’d be a haul. Though CWRU’s average SAT at 2000ish might make it a slight reach, you never know! their acceptance rate is something like 50% anyway. Plus it’s free to apply

Great biomedical engineering at Binghamton? SoCcErTrAcK2016, what are you basing that on. Maybe their nursing program is strong but I don’t think the OP wants nursing.
