South Campus apartment vs Dorm price worth it?

I’m debating whether to get an apartment or not in South Campus next year. Currently a freshman and will be sophomore next year.

I looked on the resident life website and saw that the max. price would be around $8000 for 2016-2017 academic year. On the south campus website, the max price of an apartment is around $14000 for the year. Am I right about this? Will there be that much of a price between a dorm and a place on South Campus?

I’be been wanting to cook on my own so I can eat healthier and focus on my clean meals when I workout which is why I’m inclined towards getting an apartment so I can cook on my own. But the price is significantly higher for an apartment. And I’m also an out of state student.

So is it worth getting an apartment in terms of cost and money? Mainly because I want to be able to cook by myself. Will I be saving money by not enrolling in the dining plan and going for an apartment or will it not make a difference?

@utsav08 thats the same question, I wanted to ask. Ill be a sophomore too next year at UMD, and I don’t know if I want to live in an Apartment or dorm. I was thinking about a suite or at least a dorm with a personal bathroom to share with a roommate, but an apartment would be nice too

You can get apartments for less than 14k per year. My son pays @700 per month this year and will pay a little more than that next year.

@1214mom can you tell me the name of the apartment or a link? I might interested

@utsav08 - Did you submit a leasing application and get a priority number? Lease signing appointments start tomorrow. They currently have more applicants than spaces and rising juniors have priority.

No Im was thinking about a place in the campus such as the Old or New Leanordtown apartments. I didn’t think I needed a application for those since I will be picking a places based on preference through the residence life website. We find out the priority numbers near end of March.

I may have misread your original post. I interpreted South Campus as South Campus Commons. You may be ok for Leonardtown depending on the priority number you get. Good Luck.

College Park Towers is a location very close to the business school.
