Should I live in South in a 4 person suite, or a Hatch single traditional yet with the journalism FIG? Any advice...i wish I could have a journalism FIG in South...but they're all filled up...

^^^ooo just realized its a Learning Community, not a FIG…so it might not be all freshmen…anybody able to help me out…I’d like to decide whether or not to switch from South to Hatch ASAP because the rooms fill up fast and there’s only one left…

Both Hatch and South are new dorms and are definitely very nice (and somewhat comparable) in the interior. Rooms will be similar in both of them. Both are far from your classes (which will be in the central part of campus) because South is on the west side of campus and Hatch is on the east. You’ll have at least a ten minute, likely fifteen minute, walk to class–sounds daunting, but it’s really not so bad!

South: suites are fun if you like your suitemates. Keeping your common room clean can be a hassle, which sounds strange but is true. Having your own bathroom is a definite plus in my opinion though, and was a major selling point for my dorm choice a few years back (Discovery). Football freshmen and some sophomores live in dorms, so that can be fun. There are few better dorms for the fall, considering your primary Saturday entertainment is a hundred feet away. Not a ton of community feel in the newer dorms though, and with suites the community feel many seek with dorms is even harder to find.

Hatch: Don’t know many people that lived there, but Hatch (and its brother Schurz) seem to have more community feelings to them than North (and its brothers) do–perhaps because Hatch still has community style bathrooms? Either way, the bathrooms at Hatch were completely renovated too and are quite nice for community style bathrooms–not gross at all. The few people that I have known who live there liked it a lot, but they also complained about its distance from classes and dining halls (unless you’re cool with Baja, which is sort of like Mizzou’s student-chargeable Taco Bell in the basement of Schurz/Hatch).

As for the Journalism LC, I have no idea how it is run. My guess would be that there’s probably some sort of freshman component to what you do, and you’ll likely have floor meetings and opportunities to do things journalism-y or service-related or just fun together. For whatever reason, it seems that most of the LC related activities are pretty heavy at the beginning of semester and wind down toward the end; in Discovery, this was mainly because the students in charge of planning stuff got busy toward the middle of the semester too (I was one of them!)

If I were you, and I already had a guaranteed room in South, I’d probably stick with that rather than gamble my chances to get into the Hatch learning community. My experience with LCs has been that they’re sort of like a club that just happens to be in your dorm. If you want to do the things that the LC does, you can easily find similar activities in a club or society. Not to mention the fact that you’re going to make friends with the people on your floor regardless of which dorm you choose, and who knows: maybe if you have friends that aren’t journalism (if you decide to stay in South) they’ll provide you with a really cool perspective on college because you won’t always be surrounded by the same people.

Go Tigers! If there’s anything I can do, feel free to PM me.

Anybody else have insight on other dorms that might be better than South?

If Schurz is the one with Baja in it, like I think it is, I would recommend that (since Hatch is apparently right there). The lounges in there were so much nicer than the other dorms I’d been in, and Baja is by far the best dining place. In addition, Plaza, Rollins, Emporium, Pizza 2 Go are about a 2 minute walk away. Your not really far away from classes at all. You’re a 2 minute walk or so from Rollins Street, and that is the hub street for most freshman classes (Annheuser Busch, Strickland, Arts and Sciences, etc. can all be reached right off there). You won’t be going to the Journalism buildings for class, unless you’re taking an honors seminar. The journalism career explorations is usually in the business school, I think it’s called Cornell, which is on Rollins Street. And then Arts and Science is where they do the Principles, and that’s right off Rollins too.

The positive of South is that it’s by Dobbs dining hall, which is by far the best dining hall. They have a charcoal grill, which leads to better tasting grill items.

I’d say go Hatch though. Just go down Rollins Road to get to your classes. Have a bunch of dining options nearby, including the almighty Baja. If you want to go to the Rec Center or Dobbs, pretty much just follow that one sidewalk.

FYI, I actually got into Mark Twain’s Journalism FIG, so I gave up South for it…housing for me is done now…but thanks for the info

I’d stay the hell away from Mark Twain and their Journalism FIG’s.

Its kinda too late, but why, might I ask?
