and the Republicans aren't much better.

Southern Democrats are awesome. They're liberal AND they get everyone's votes.

Like Clinton, for instance. <3

No, the ones I'm talking about are quite conservative. Just Democrats because Lincoln was a Republican.

But, yeah, old Billy was a great president

Democrats are not liberal.

Oh, you're talking about Southern Democrats in the APUSH student sense of the term. I see. I'm plagued as well. I feel your pain.

And Democrats are liberal enough to pass laws I like. They're not exactly near-Socialists (like in Canada, up until recent elections), which I would prefer, but they're certainly the lesser of two evils.

Democrats are less conservative than republicans, but they aren't liberal

I'd say the Democratic Party right now is socially liberal. Not as much so fiscally or when it comes to international relations, but with domestic social issues they're pretty leftist (aside from a few exceptions like "don't ask/don't tell" etc.).

Well, a gay marriage ban passed here today in the election. You know, two people getting married is the least of Alabama's problems. We have a terribly overcrowded prison system, have one of the worst education systems in the country, and one of our leading gubernatorial candidates (and former governors) just wrapped up a trial for mismanagement of te state's funds.

Being against gay marriage is one side I can't even comprehend the logic for. If you don't like gay people, don't look at them. It's as simple as that. Stripping them of their rights as citizens is just unreasonable and unnecessary.

And does anyone agree that civil unions are like slave marriages?

I would much rather see a happy, emotionally healthy family with two fathers or two mothers raising a child than a destructive, abusive hetero one, and vice versa.

And, plus, it isn't any of my business.

Yeah--that sounds right, Leah.

AL doesn't even recognize out-of-state gay marriages. The Supremacy clause should then be enough to strike that amendment down.

Hopefully. But we've been going downhill as of late.

Downhill meaning slipping further to the right, of course.

OOOOOOOOOH! Liberals and gays are teh hax!

Wait--wasn't Bill Clinton the man who signed the DOMA?

Both parties right now are fiscally liberal. Democrats want to spend and Republicans are spending. Haha, the 'great' Bill Clinton did sign DOMA. If the Democrat party wasn't controlled by overzealous minority leaders (nancy pelosi, jesse jackson) then it would be much better. Im a registered independant with moderate views...I dont like Bush, gays are people too...but please dont say Bill Clinton was a good president.

on a some what unrelated topic, the fact that mumia abu jamal is still incarcerated disgusts me.

you think his brother shot the cop?

I think there is not enough evidence to keep him in jail, all 4 of the witnesses have been discredited, all we know is that he shot a cop and a cop shot him.

They also used the fact that he was a black panther to claim he wanted to kill a cop, even though he had no previous criminal record.

hey...at least he aint on death row anymore

Don't you see? Democrats and Republicans are basically the same party. Seriously. They're all the same to me: power-hungry bastards telling the American people what they want to hear. So, I support 3rd parties (though, I know they won't win).
