I live in North Alabama and have been singing my entire life. I’m 21 and a Cosmetology major at a local community college. I want to switch majors and schools, but I want to remain close to home and not have to pay a fortune. Any ideas on MT schools fairly close to me that aren’t extremely expensive? Thank you! -Shay

I’m in Alabama also & have a D who is a freshman MT (not instate). UAB has just announced that they will have a BFA MT program starting next year. U of AL has a great program, the University of Montevallo has a program, and so does Troy University. For most programs you have to start as a Freshman for your MT classes, but you’d have to check with the schools to see if you have any gen eds that might transfer. Many MT majors are older, or transfers. Check on scholarships and financial aid! And good luck in your search!

Belhaven University in Jackson MS, and U. of Mississippi both have BFA MT. Mississippi College has BM MT. Not sure about U. of Southern Mississippi, but they have a great music program with Maryann Kyle. Look her up. Florida has several.

Visit Montevallo!

Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. Check it out.

Southern Miss - join their Southern Exposure team for great experience and resume`. Their band has been invited to the Macy Day parade many times…perhaps more than any other Univ. Choose Southern Miss and you will not be disappointed with their Music and Theatre. Apply for a Regional Scholarship to have your Out of State waived. Audition dates are still happening for Lipscomb Univ’s BFA program. Check out the thread on here for more info!

I’m auditioning for Belmont in Nashville, and and they are well- known for their strong music program. I believe that their MT program is still fairly new, but I’ve heard great things about it! I’ve also heard good things about Shorter in Georgia, and I have a friend who got a large scholarship
University of West Florida is also another option which is right by the Florida Alabama border. It is a quickly growing program with great professors.
