Spanish Exam

I was wondering how important it is to take the Spanish Exam on-line. I can’t really tell if the instructions in my packet are telling me to take it or if it’s just a good idea. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it might save me an hour or two. Thanks.

Take it! Spanish and German offer their validation exams online, which is really nice because:

1) You can prepare for it beforehand if you need a little review
2) It's one less thing you'll have to do during BCT
3) You're better rested/more sane now than you'll be in BCT, so you'll probably do better too

Definitely go ahead and take it beforehand. I validated five semesters based on that test.
Five less classes = happy cadet. :)

i believe it depends. the problem with it is if you forget things over summer/first semester. since i am a tech major and don't need language, so by the time i fought to get 321 in my schedule, i had to drop to 223 to remember things. also, in order to recieve a minor, you need 4 classes 200 level or higher. so while its great to place into 200 or higher, if you start with 321, you don't get credit for 141, 142, 222, or 223. so now instead of stopping at 322 to earn your minor, you must take 365 and another higher one. not that that's bad, but it makes it harder

i decided after 223 and 321 to drop the minor all together. if i only needed to take 322 for the minor, i might have done it.

so in other words, it's nice to have it overwith, but you may place into a level higher than what you may want since its fresh. i wouldn't study, i'd just wait til a week or so before, take it

For all tests, i'd recomend this:

ONLY ANSWER WHAT YOU KNOW! If you're 50/50, guess if you feel confident. otherwise, leave it blank. it's better to get a "worse" score but get into a class your level than to guess lucky, get into a higher class, then fail because you weren't prepared for it.

LEAVING ANSWERS BLANK IS OKAY

tried looking at the german exam today and got some error.. hm

can you validate the required foreign language credits by doing well on the spanish online exam or do they just put you into a more advanced class?

you get put into a more advanced class, but do not get validation credit. so that can be good or bad depending on how you look at it

It saved me two classes toward my minor.

if you get out of 141 and 142 that helps, but nothing higher does

I was able to test into Spanish 365 with just four years of high school spanish. The higher language levels are very challenging, do not agree to be in them unless you are almost fluent in the language. The upper level classes are basically a history/literature/culture events course in a different language. Take the test, and do as well as you can. This will put you at an advantage over your classmates when it comes to trips during your breaks, I will be spending a month in Mexico this summer to gain hands on experience with the language and culture.

Thanks. So I take it Spanish is a required course? I'm interested in taking a foreign language but not Spanish. How does that work?

No, Spanish isn't mandatory. They did, however, implement a language requirement starting with the Class of 2011. You'll have to take at least two semesters of a foreign language, and you've got eight to choose from: Spanish, French, Portugese, German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and Arabic.

do any of those (arabic, chinese, or any others) get you a bonus when you get commissioned? i may've heard somewhere that it could..

All of them, except Spanish :(, will earn you bonus pay if you can pass a fluency test.

I took the Spanish validation test (I took Spanish my Junior year in HS) and got placed into a advanced basic level spanish class. So instead of getting frustrated with re-learning stuff I learned a couple years ago but still know, I get a chance to review some stuff but then jump closer to where I should actually be. Hence why it's important to give an accurate depiction in the tests of your actual knowledge. Like eagle said, don't guess unless you're pretty confident about it.

so if you want to be a tech major, is it possible to just validate the two required semesters of language or would u just be put in more advanced classes if u do well on the online exam. (im assuming that most of you want to minor in a language, but not me)

there are some other than spanish that also do not give you pay. there is a list somewhere, but i don't have it.

and the fluency test is not, easy, so don't take a language solely thinking you'll get highger pay. some native speakers cannot pass the fluency test

What is the process to validate Chinese?

You take a test during BCT.

What if you want to minor in German, but have taken a couple of Spanish classes? Which test do you take then?

Cool. I'm thinking Chinese...:)
