Special Admission Scenario - Gap year + decision

<p>My S was accepted to a lower-tier Ivy and decided to defer admission last year. This year, he took a year off and also applied to other schools whose decisions come out April 1. However, the Ivy he deferred wants a response in a week. Can he accept that and change his mind in April if accepted elsewhere?</p>

<p>I was under the impression that if you defer enrollment, you are forbidden from applying to other schools. I know this is definitely the case at at least Dartmouth. How did he apply to other schools after accepting admission to the school he deferred from?</p>
