Speech and Debate Summer camps

Can anyone recommend a good Speech and Debate summer camp for Public forum?

Yale’s “Ivy Scholars Program” directed by Dr. Minh Luong is grueling, highly selective, world-renown educators who will personally critique you. It is, quite simply, phenomenal! Google it. If you get in, you will come out being completely changed. It was instrumental in getting me to top ranks in national competitions, particlularly LD and Extemp.

Which one did you go? Among the three, which one is best for rising seniors? Thanks.

It depends a lot on what kind of debate you do. In terms of public forum I have heard great things about NDF (national debate forum), and most of the highly ranked public forum teams on the circuit seem to have attended. PF is probably also the kind of debate that least requires a summer camp to succeed, though.

Had kids who have been to Emory,Northwestern, Gonzaga, Whitman and Cal-berk. Make sure whatever program you attend is emphasizing what you want. Both mine did policy and there are programs that emphasize research, others that emphasize speaking skills and sometimes its the breakdown of weeks in the program that have different emphasis. Many aren’t run or staffed by the university that is housing it so you need to do homework yourself.

UTNIF is amazing.

my friend went to one at USC lastyear

Could those who went to IVY Scholars compare the three programs at Yale? I am considering to apply but don’t know which one is more research/academic oriented and which is speaking oriented.

Check this one out:

Thanks for this information. I will explore it right now.

Can anyone help out with the Yale Ivy Scholars program? They have two programs and I am unsure of which one to which I should apply.

I am a rising sophomore and would like something that would help me with Public Forum debate as well.

Would I be right to see this as a combination of debate camp and Georgetown’s national security institute?

EDIT: I have posted my comments relating to the Yale program in the more appropriate forum.

My new question is this: what is the best Public Forum program for a rising sophomore?

How is the Harvard Debate Council program?

Bump,

bummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmp

Have you been to the HDC Summer WS? I’ve never done debate before but the Public Speaking and Argumentation section is supposed to be introductory.

Well, it honestly depends on what debate you wanna do. LD, policy, pofo, parli or congress? However, for most debate institutes and camps, registration should be closed. Judging by the name, Public Speaking and Argumentation would be better for a speech event or Congress.

There is a terrific summer debate camp called Capitol Debate Summer Camps at Loyola University of Maryland and University of San Diego! The website is [Academic Camps - Debate, Leadership, Writing, Speaking, and More](http://www.capitoldebate.com)

I’m in Public Forum, currently a novice. I want to get into varsity next year.
Is Yale or Harvard’s debate summer camp better?

For alumni of the Yale Global Scholars program, what was the focus of your answer/topics you discussed (i.e. was the essay very personal or more generic)? I’m not sure how to approach this essay so any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks so much! (sorry for posting so late, I am very new to CC, and I’m not sure if members are allowed to post after a long period of time)

If you’re looking for a speech and debate program, you should consider Dartmouths

[The Debate Institutes at Dartmouth Summer 2013: Programs in Debate Skills & Strategy](http://www.ddidebate.org)

In its 30th year, Debate Institutes at Dartmouth have trained notable champions at all levels of debate and individuals who have gone on to be the top in their fields in law, medicine, academics, business and more.

if you’re looking for an introduction to argumentation or public speaking, their Public Debate Skills Workshop is highly regarded as a good one-week intensive program with many practice speeches. It is also the only summer program to be affiliated and offer courses for the International Public Policy Forum, as well as all other styles of debate.

Experienced debaters might find the DDI program more appropriate. This 4 week program has been the hallmark of summer debate programs for 30 years.
