Sponsors

Voice of myself: "sponsors are the GREATEST"

voice of 2010 - "sponsors are the GREATEST." :)

Our son's sponsor family has more or less adopted him as a grandson, and treat us as family, too. We went to their house for a cookout during Parents Weekend, and exchange Christmas gifts. They even keep track of what son is doing. When son was in Annapolis for an athletic even last fall, they called his cell phone to see how he was doing, and to let him hear the crowd cheering at a home football game (they never miss a home game). His sponsor dad is a retired USAFA grad, and loves the Academy.
Their fridge is full of pictures of past cadets that they have sponsored, and they can name off how many kids that each has, where they are stationed, what they fly, etc. It is truly amazing how open-hearted that these people are. Our son is very lucky to have such support.

we too got an email regarding sponsor family sign up. just yesterday. the form is very specific and i would say to be honest and then hopefully you will get a great match. the email also had a booklet to download for the kids to read about the program. you can also find this info on the usafa website ....on the main page go down and then to the right ...... in this area you can click to get into the sponsor sprogram details.

fortunately for us, we will be able to "sponsor" our child as we live within the radius to do so. boy, that, as a mom, feels wonderful!!!

Our son's sponsor family has become part of our family. They have been there for him for all of his events. They were there with us to watch the ceremony when he became an official member of the "Wings of Blue" and on the 50 yard line when he jumped into his first Falcon Football game. They took pictures of his ring and of him and his date to the "Ring Dance". His sponsor dad, a retired AFA grad will do the commissioning for our son in 87 days on the evening before graduation.
So we agree wholeheartedly, the program is great and provides a safe haven even upper classmen!

doesn't it seem rather odd that it's an email and they didn't just send it out to everyone at once?

hmm...

Seven2go, does the packet allow for local parents to sign on as a 'sponsor' for their own cadet? Other threads lead one to believe that weekend passes are easier to obtain of the cadet is headed out to the sponsor's house and refrigerator.

yes and yes to ED.

Eagle Driver/

the cadet has to fill out the form (standard procedure....).......they will request the parents as sponsors.

then, in addition, the parents will have to obtain, and then fill out the additional form to "request to BE a sponsor family". this form then will allow the sponsor family to list the cadets they want to sponsor. (If you have a cadet, you can list their name at this point...)

i was pleasantly surprised that we could sponsor our child! we will potentially sponsor other cadets as well! the program sounds fantastic.

Our son was never told who his sponsor family was. Doolie Day Out family never made it clear what/who they were. Fortunately we have very good friends in COS who have recently become his sponsor family. He is thankful for his IC sport, which got him off the hill without having to use all of his passes.

I might add that connections make a difference too! 07PETKO's sponsor family for doolie day out and now is my sponsor family. Since he was with me the Academy asked if my sponsors would work, and it did! :) He's lucky too, our sponsor's are AMAZING. :)

Agreed. :D

So, when/how will we find out who our sponsor family is?

if you've gotten your appointment, you should've gotten an email the other day w/ a form to fill out and turn in.. if not, be patient and it'll come :) i'm not quite sure when, i'm guessing when the academic year starts in august though

OK. I did get the e-mail, I just wasn't sure when I'd find out who they matched me with. Thanks!

Unless they requested someone is particular, all of 2011 found out who their sponsor was the week before Parents Weekend. At least, that's what happened to my squad.

you'll have a doolie day out sponsor, and then a sponsor for the rest of your cadet career. sometimes its the same, other times its not
