For those that will be attending SPOP before the rest of us, please tell us how it went, what you did, how counseling was done, etc(with as much detail as possible). Have fun and Thanks!

I know there are people out there.

You can try going to: [Log In | Facebook](<a href=“UCI Class of 2015 - Official | Facebook”>UCI Class of 2015 - Official | Facebook) . I know people have been talking about SPOP a lot!

I just got back from SPOP 1. I had a lot of fun and met a lot of new people! Counseling is done in groups, but it also depends on your major. If you have a small major then you might get some 1 on 1 counseling. If you have a large major such as Biological Sciences, then it won’t be that useful. It’s a good idea to have the schedule that you want already planned out. You should check online to see what classes are full and what is open before SPOP comes. Write down the course # because that is what you use to register and if you have all the numbers you can input them into WebReg and be done in 5 minutes.

People don’t really sleep during SPOP, they have a lot of activities and icebreakers planned until the early morning. There’s group bonding activities that are done within each hall. Although there will be approximately 500 people, you’ll probably only get close with the people in your hall (which is around 40-50 people). We played games such as cross the line, fishbowl, ten fingers, never have I ever…etc. There are many workshops that you can go to which are listed on the SPOP website, but overall there is a lot of free time to do whatever you want. You don’t have to attend the workshops.

There’s also a dance on the first night. I was surprised because that wasn’t on the website. It’s for around 2 hours and it’s a great way to mingle and meet new people. Everyone is really open and most people don’t know that many people beforehand so making friends is easy.

If you have any more questions, ask away!

What time does SPOP end on the last day? Because I’m from San Francisco and I have something to do later that night.

Ive been told 5-5:30. Here is a schedule: [UCI Orientation 2011](http://partridge.vcsa.uci.edu/orientation/schedules.php?type=spop#content)

Hahah, sounds fun. Thank you for the post Cacophonous.

SPOP ends pretty early, around 5ish, but a lot of people leave earlier because they have a long drive back or other commitments. A lot of activities are optional which means that you don’t have to stay. Some people just come for registration on the first day and then leave (like my roommate).

My daughter’s roommate didn’t spend the night either, but she did come back the second day.

I really thought my daughter would want to leave early, she got VERY little sleep the night before, but she was having such a blast and really enjoyed the dorm closing activities. I would encourage those who can to stay for the whole thing. Daughter is very pumped for the fall now, after SPOP.

Oh my gosh it was the BEST! I loved it and the people there, they were all SO nice and I can’t wait to see them all again!

At first I felt like a little fish in the ocean because I didn’t know anyone there and everyone was like, dead quiet. But then people who were friends because they came from the same schools showed up and started talking to each other, and I was like, “Damn this sucks!” But you really start to get into the groove of getting to know people after awhile-- If I could do SPOP over again, I would introduce myself to everyone and try to get to know as many people as I could, so I recommend you really try to put yourself out there. The greatest thing was that nobody judged you for anything, and really, like, everyone was automatically “cool” no matter what they looked like or said.

I actually got a decent amount of sleep, but gave up my dorm’s nighttime activity. It didn’t really seem like I missed all that much since everyone was so tired during the activity anyway. There were a few inside jokes that I missed, but really it wasn’t like super detrimental, and I felt really good the next day since I wasn’t exhausted. The food was much better than expected, and I definitely hit the all-you-can-eat ice cream bar!

Also, there was enough time for some girls to shower-- if anyone was wondering about that. The staffers at SPOP are the BEST btw, like seriously, get to know them! They make it twice- no, thrice as fun as it would’ve been otherwise. The talent show they put on is actually really funny and I was so impressed!

As for the workshops… yeah I definitely skipped out on both of those haha, maybe that’s why I had so much free time…

If you’re in the Honors program, you’ll get counseling 1-on-1 no matter what your major is. It really doesn’t make all that much of a difference though-- I got there late since I had to go to an oral interview for my Japanese placement, so I just started clicking around based on what someone sitting next to me told me to do, signed up for some random classes that fit into my GE requirements and had a nice arrangement time-wise. The advisor came over and said my schedule looked great. I still have no idea what I did, but hey! All’s well that ends well.

Random tidbits that I would’ve wanted to know before SPOP?

They let us put our luggage down. Like, nobody would tell me that we wouldn’t have to haul our stuff around all day. (I mean, obviously we wouldn’t, but I didn’t want to risk it, y’know?) Some people brought SO much luggage, so really, don’t be afraid of being “that one person with a TON of luggage”. Me and another girl brought sooo little because we didn’t want to look like we’d mistaken SPOP for move-in day. But really, you can bring anything you need. And I’d recommend bringing your own pillow. I didn’t use the ones they provided since I brought my own linens, but the ones they provided looked pretty wimpy hahaha!

This isn’t too important, and you guys might know this already from housing tours, but there’s no wifi in the dorms! I wanted to check my e-mail in my room and… yeah nothing.

The third floor (if you end up living on the third floor of your dorm) is HOT I heard. I was on the second floor and it wasn’t so bad, we just kept the windows open the entire day from the minute we walked in until check-out time.

I left SPOP at around 5:40~ish because my dorm had a last minute activity (my favorite activity of the entire orientation) but people starting leaving at around 5:00~ish so it depends on your dorm really.

That’s all I can think of, hope it wasn’t a tl;dr!

And also: SHADOWFAM!!!

how many students attend each spop? I have this class that I really want but 183 of the 240 spots have been filled. there are two spops before mine. the class is probability and stats in social science. what are the chances that all the spots are not fileld yet?

There were about 500 people at SPOP 1, apparently. ^^

People will be dropping and picking up classes as it goes along, but if you already know you want that class, can’t you register for it now, before your SPOP?

Thanks for the post.

That’s actually what I thought before too. However, I have a friend who was in SPOP 6 and tried enrolling but she could not because Webreg said her enrollment window was not open yet. I guess UCI linked Webreg with our SPOP dates.

where is the link to check how many spots are available for the classes?

The link is here [Schedule of Classes](http://websoc.reg.uci.edu/) Each class will say the max, number enrolled, and number waitlisted.

There’s no internet in the dorms?! D:
So i shouldn’t even bother bringing my laptop?

There’s wifi everywhere else on campus, just not in the dorms. From my experience, you don’t need a laptop, and you certainly won’t have time for it. The schedule is packed with things to do from workshops to fairs to bonding time.

If we’re planning on switching majors, then we should choose classes for the major we want to switch into, right?

They do have internet in the dorms, but it is hard wired via an ethernet cable. No need to bring a laptop for SPOP, but do plan on it for the fall.
