How are the sports teams at Lafayette? Do students usually go watch- how big is their fan base?

I get the feeling like Lafayette isn't the most spirited school, am I way off base here?

My impression, as a parent of a Lafayette freshman, is that while the students don't go overboard with school spirit like you'd see at some of the DI football factories or at Duke for basketball, they do turn out in reasonable numbers for team sports. We came down for a couple football games last fall and there were pretty good crowds for a small college. Lafayette, in fact, did lead the Patriot League in attendance for football in 2008; granted, most attendees were local residents, alums and parents.

As for support for other team sports I can't say. I went to a Division III LAC for my B.A. and a Division I university for graduate school. From what I have seen so far Lafayette strikes a nice balance between the two in terms of school spirit and the sports scene (the exception being the Lafayette-Lehigh game which mimics the big time with all its sudsy lunacy -- but that's mostly alums).

Remember that Lafayette has the smallest student body size in the Patriot League. Support for all athletic endeavors is generally supported by students, because the athletes are your friends and colleagues. They are not simply seen on campus. Rather, they are in many of the same classes as the general student body.

One drawback to student support for athletic teams is that many events take place at Metzgar Fields, which is a substantial athletic complex located 3 miles north of campus. Most students have to take a shuttle bus there (the exception being the X-C team which is required to run there and back - I speak from experience). The net effect, depending on the weather and other events on campus, is to have an "away" feeling "home". My personal experience while at Lafayette was that athletic events on campus were well attended and supported. Events at Metzgar were more sparsely attended.

Hasn't the basketball had a great deal of success in the Patriot League? It seems when I read John Feinstein's book about Patriot League basketball, they were a league power.

School spirit is practically nonexistent

science,

Did you really take the time to register just to say that?

All I can say is, "¡Aye, Dios mio!"
