Sports EC > Club/society EC?

basically my gym teacher has been aggressively trying to recruit me for the track team and I'm thinking about submitting to him. The thing is that he wants me to train 6 days a week and if I join the team I won't have time for other ECs like Chess Club or etc...

Would being on a varsity team look better on a college app than having a few clubs/societies?

the time commitment of 99% of clubs/soceties is pathetic compared to that of sports (JV and Varsity, at least)

That is not true for everyone…some ppl are more committed than others…I wonder the same thing about jobs…I work 3 hrs a day after school…isnt that equivelant to a sport??

Does anyone else have any thoughts?

The thing about most sports/jobs it that it is almost guaranteed you are doing something, being with people, etc. You need to work hard/do a good job when you do such things.

Just being part of a club doesn’t mean you do anything, you would need to prove it.

I would agree with chenman333, unless you can show that you are a very devoted member of a club.

i’m in a similar situation, my cross-country coach wants me on the team, but senior boys has to run 7k races. So i’m like, Yeah right, i’m not gonna drop 10 pounds before ball season starts.

most schools don’t care about ECs. For those that do, member of the Chess club or whatever is meaningless. Win a state or national competition, yes that will definitely help. Play chess every Wednesday at lunch or whatever, nobody will care. And same with that track team. Member of track team isn’t going to get you much recognition at the very selective colleges that have apps from those winning regional and state competitions, as well as the US Olympic team members.
