I thought it would be nice to have a thread to post scores and such from Dartmouth sports.
Hockey
B-ball
etc.

If anybody has them, please post them here.
I know Xanatos has in the past.....keep it up, please.

Sweet... anyone know about Dartmouth sailing? Is it intense? Do they train all-year round?

thanks Xanatos--you're the man!

dartmouth sailing, thank god, does not train all year round... a little too cold for that. from what the coach has told me, they get off the water in november (after the fall season ends) and hope to be back on this year by easter.. they will all go south over spring break though (can't remember where).
from what i can tell, college sailing is as intense as you want it to be. i have a bunch of friends who are sailing at various places now, adn they say the racing is intense but so is the partying...i know most teams do get lots of walk ons/people who haven't done much sailing before.

skyandsea, are you a sailing recruit? if so, what regattas and other sailing honors have you won?

i guess you could call me a recruit... i've exchanged a couple emails with the coach, not much more. i've been recruited more heavily at other schools (that are supposedly better than dartmouth in the polls, but whatever, i dont pretend to understand this recruiting thing)
anyway, i sail laser radials, been doing the whole circuit on them for the past two summers. qualified for high school singlehanded nationals, top five at leiter cup (girls' singlehanded nationals), and a bit more... haven't actually won any big regattas, but i've been top girl at a bunch.
what do you sail?

I am from upstate New York, so Lightnings are huge. I sail those very competitively- I have sailed in Jr. internation regattas in South America, and this pass summer I won the Jr. North American Championships (only as crew). Besides that, I sail lasers (standard rig), J22s, and Snipes. But my only major victories have been on the lighting. Good luck with college admissions! Maybe I will see you on the water next fall.

Cool... so does anyone know what sailing practice is like? Is it physically intense? How long do you meet for every day? How much of a time commitment is it?

by the way, skyandsea, be proud of what you have done with sailing. It is very respectable, and anyone who sails a laser well is a good sailor.

rasberrysmoothie- i don't know how dartmouth structures their practices, but i can ask one of the coaches.. (thanks, actually, for giving me a reason to email them back... i always cant think of questions to ask)

At all of the schools with sailing teams I have visited, it seems that the teams practice from 3-5 days a week. From what I know Hobart and William Smith's practice is the most intense. Last weekend I visited Fordham University and stayed with a sailor, and he said that Fordham's practices are competitive for the top sailors.... but in college sailing you get a lot of kids who are beginners, so for those people the practice is very layback and fun. All in all, I think college sailing will be great!

Speak of the devil...

Do they have a novice or walk-on team at Dartmouth? Sailing is an interest of my daughter's, but she has had no competitive experience. I thought the Dartmouth team was highly rated (as in not walk-on type)

Can people at Dartmouth talk about:

-sailing
-crew
-alpine skiing

When do they train throughout the year? How long is practice? Do the team members have time for other significant commitments (like the newspaper, or community service)? Also, rate each one from most intense to least. Thanks
