Sports!

I really love sports, and I really want them to be apart of my college experience. I want to go to a school where the students pack both the football stadium and the basketball court. And Soccer and Volleyball must have a good following as well. I'm for sure going to play soccer and ultimate frisbee as an intramural sports. And I want to go to a school where they are competitive, and most of the student body participates as well.

So what school comes to mind after reading this?

Football and bball- UVA, University of Wisconsin

Most Div I schools fit the specifications......what are you looking for as far as academics? Packing football and basketball can be found at schools of any NCAA size. Soccer and volleyball are pretty popular at a lot of schools. As far as intramurals, there will be competitive students playing intramurals at almost any school.

I go to Iowa State and we have been recognized for being one of the most competitive and complete intramural programs in the nationa. Divisions for those who've never played (D League) all the way up to an equivalent of Collegiate JV/High school Varsity (A League) and nearly every sport played in the U.S. There are other schools with a similar program. Check out <a href="http://www.recservices.iastate.edu/im/%5B/url%5D">http://www.recservices.iastate.edu/im/</a> for what a top program looks like. Also check out the club sports--again, most schools have them--clubs for most mainstream sports that the official athletic dept doesn't sponsor.
ISU's complete list of intramurals: Ultimate Frisbee (Fall), Texas Hold 'Em, Labor Day Sand Volleyball, Flag Football, Singles Bowling, Curling, Disc Golf, 9-Ball Pool, Broomball, Adventure Race, Badminton, Volleyball, Dodgeball, Cross Country, Racquetball, Swimming, Indoor Soccer, Singles Table Tennis, Indoor Climbing, Foosball, 500 Card Tourney, NCAA Bowl Pick 'Em, 3 Point Shoot, 5 Player basketball, Ice hockey, Wrestling, Team Bowling, Hearts Card Tourney, Doubles Table Tennis, 8-Ball Pool doubles, Euchre doubles, Racquetball doubles, Slow pitch softball, co-ed volleyball, co-ed broomball, NCAA Basketball Pick 'Em, Badminton doubles, Outdoor soccer, Best shot golf, Ultimate Frisbee (spring), Disc Golf, Sand Volleyball, co-ed broomball (summer), 3 player basketball, slow pitch softball (summer)

Again, alot will depend on what you're looking for based on academics. Once you figure out schools you'd like to attend academically, search their website for an intramurals site. Should help you out in your decision.

And if you end up at a school that offers BROOMBALL as an intramural or club sport, do it. At least once. My favorite intramural so far!

My school definitely fits your description.

University of Tennessee

Ill give a list:
- Ohio State University: not only they love to be buckeyes but they win football games as well and this year basketball games :D.
- Florida: The gators love their football.
- North Carolina: BBALL
- MSU: Lots of support to Bball and Football Teams
- Notre Dame: Classical football team.
- Michigan: FOOOTBALLL
- PENN STATE: they show pride but they lose a ton :D
- U Miami: Lots of love but lose a ton
- USC: Probably the best football team in the west
- Texas: The Longhorns have great football and bball teams

Thanks...

I plan on applying to UMiami, UCSB, ASU, SDSU, and LMU for sure, but I really want huge sports schools as options.

I was thinking Penn St. and Indiana, but the location and weather doesn't really appeal to me.

SOCAL, Penn St, I agree. Location is in Amish country so its really in the middle of nowhere. Indiana is a different story. Its been rated one of the prettiest campuses in the U.S. Lots of woods and hills if ur into that. Location wise is pretty sweet college town. Lots of culture in it supposedly. in the college visits section, A2wolves did a really good description of it when he went. Weather is a problem :D... It gets really cold from what I hear.

Right now Miami is the school with best sports in ur list. ASU is more party than a combination of sports and party.

University of Arizona
University of Oregon
University of Washington
University of Iowa

if you want weather... USC, UT-Austin

Here's a useful resource I used last year in my college process:
<a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_online/news/2002/10/01/1_10/%5B/url%5D">http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_online/news/2002/10/01/1_10/</a></p>

You can also do college towns if you want
<a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2003/sioncampus/09/10/top_ten0916/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2003/sioncampus/09/10/top_ten0916/index.html</a></p>

And then there's the "Students Pack the Stadiums" rating on Princeton Review

Sell out crowd at Cox Arena..SDSU VS BYU (21st ranked)......Victory SDSU.

I'm going to be a bit of a contrarian ... I do not think there are a ton of schools that have football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball; especially if you're looking for men's teams in all those sports ... for example, probably less than 2/3 of the big time D1 football schools have men's soccer teams ... and I would think many less have volleyball. I would suggest going to ncaa.org and finding out which schools have all 4 sports and I bet your startign list of schools is only 25-30 schools long.

UCONN!!! because connecticut doesnt have any major league sports teams, the entire state supports the uconn athletic department.

-since 1990, easily one of the top programs in mens basketball (this season is a bit of an anomaly, but they did lose their top 6 scorers from last year, so next year they'll be back in the fight). 2 championships in past 8 years

-womens basketball is easily one of the top 2 programs in the country (tennessee is the other). always a national championship contender, 5 championships in past 11 years. about as dominant of a team as you can get. to the surprise of many from outside the state, womens basketball is just as supported as the mens team- the state is crazy about both teams, and unless you are a student, tickets are extremely difficult to get due to their popularity. EVERY single game is televised, the only womens team in the country that can say that.

-football is an up and coming program. they made the switch to D-1A just a few years ago, and have a brand new stadium that holds 40,000 fans, this past season every home game was sold out.

-mens soccer- hugely popular on campus, extremely well supported, a national contender year in and year out (won 2004 championship)

-womens soccer- see description of mens soccer

the soccer teams have the best average attendance in the country for mens AND womens soccer

-field hockey - a national contender year in and year out (2006 final 4)

-womens ice hockey- nationally ranked

-mens ice hockey- students pack the arena

(im not sure about fan support at the other sports, i've never been to a game)

not too shabby!!!!!

"PENN STATE: they show pride but they lose a ton"

I take offense to this comment. Penn State wins at pretty much everything but basketball. Football was down a couple years ago, but in 2005 we finished #3 and would have been in the National Championship if not for an idiot official in Michigan and Lloyd Carr's constant whining (Worst two seconds of my life). Check out last years directors cup, then tell me we are not so good at sports.

To answer the orriginal post. Go for a Big 10 school you will not be disapointed.

University of Florida has an amazing football and basketball team. In 2006, they were national champions in both. Other names that come to mind are Wisconsin and Ohio State. Penn State has a ton of school spirit when it comes to football, but their basketball team is straight up awful.

Well, we certainly aren't the biggest school, but I am confident that percentage wise we are up there with any school in the country. And we an extremely high percentage of students who do IMs, I believe it is 80% of students participate in some sort of IM during their time at Wake. We also have a club Ultimate team and a club soccer team.
Football: Orange Bowl appearance this year (so exciting :) )
Basketball: ehh this year, but traditionally strong, next year should be better.
Soccer: We were in the NCAA semifinals this year.
I don't know about Volleyball.

...... (10 char)

Notre Dame is the obvious choice. Though I'm biased obviously. Sports are a huge deal here. Now that football season and basketball season have passed, its time to move on to baseball season. I have a whole bunch of buddies on the baseball team, so i'll be contributing to the packing of our baseball stadium on game days when springtime in south bend rolls around.
