Spring 2010 transfer Eligibility

Hi guys,

Just wondering if you'd be able to help me out here.
I'm not confused whether or not I'm actually eligible to apply as a spring transfer.
I've e-mailed Cornell twice, but they don't really seem to understand my question, so I'm hoping to get some answers by posting here..

I'm in a university in Australia and we have a different system here (we start in spring every year and finish in the fall), and work in a semester system.

So, I've completed my first semester in spring (which I have the results for), mid-term semester results for the 2nd semester ( I'm currently in second semester).

By the time I start at Cornell in Spring next year, I would have completed one year at my current school.

So I'm not in my first semester, first year. I'm in my second semseter, first year.

So does this mean I can apply?

I’d actually call Cornell with this question, because in text I can see how it could be hard to understand that. It makes sense to me though-you guys have summer during like, December right?

My guess is, you’d be applying for spring transfer as a sophomore in college. Except while you’ve just finished year one, everyone from the U.S. applying for spring transfer will be currently finishing their third semester of college. You’ll be in the same year, but one semester behind, I believe.

Correct me if I’m wrong if anyone has any insight on this.

I’m currently reapplying for spring semester too, so lemme know if you have any questions.

It’s so annoying … They keep giving me the same reply which is:

It is important to note that Cornell does not accept transfer applications from students who have only completed one semester of study. Because we make admission decisions for the spring term in December, and because most transfer applicants in their first year of study will not have completed one semester of course work, applicants in this situation will not be competitive in our transfer applicant pool. We would also have no record of achievement in college upon which to base our decision. Therefore, we will not consider applications from first semester, first-year students.

This is clearly not me, as I’m in my second sem. first year. and I would have completed one semester of course work, and they would have record of achievement in college. …
right?

And yes,ur right. we have summer during december

You’re correct-you’d have one semester finished and would currently be completing semester #2, which is exactly what I did last year when I applied for fall (accepted, but couldn’t go because of money issues.) So just call Cornell, preferably the school you’re transferring to (which is?) and explain to them the situation. They’ll be much friendlier and understanding via phone than in an e-mail, since they don’t understand what you mean.

so waterdept,
did u send them one sem of results + the mid-term sem. for the 2nd semester???
did u send ur SAT scores as well?
I’m afraid i wont be able to send them my sat scores either as Ill be taking them for the first time in october.

But thank you so much for your reply.
It’s such a reassurance to know that you were in the same situation as me (as in applying with one sem of results).
I’m applying to CAS.
Also, are you able to send me a copy of ur essay? I havent had any acccess to any essays here in Australia, but thought it’d help a lot if I could have a look a few that were accepted…

[Cornell University Undergraduate Admissions Office -CONTACT US](http://admissions.cornell.edu/contact/staff.cfm)

suggest you e-mail the international admission rep. S/he would more easily understand your situation and could better advise you.

I can’t help you all that much with SATs, since CALS is a state-assisted school and didn’t require us to send them (though I think I did? But mine suck, ha)

You send them as much transcript as you currently possess, or rather however much your school does, so for you, yeah, first semester + midterm grades for this one when you get them.

DEFINITELY don’t do all this without calling them (preferably at the # blue suggested above me here) because for all I know you might not be eligible.

And sorry, I make it a thing not to share my essays, especially considering I might be using the same essay that got me in for this fall again for this spring application. I have to call Cornell myself and ask what they think I should do with that, either send the same one, reformat it, or write an entire new one. It’s the same question so idk…

Hey guys,
Thanks so much for getting back to me.
I’ve emailed the international admissions office like blue said and they understood my situation and said I’m eligible to apply considering my circumstances.
And thanks water, for getting back to me about the essay and the SATs…
Cornell doesn’t require them from transfer students and I dont think they carry so much weight anyway…
I think college GPA is more an important factor anyway
But thank you so much for your help you guys :)
