I have a few questions to current, former, and parents of Barnard College students about transferring. I am in the last few quarters at my 2 year college and have plans on applying for spring 2013 semester. I have a few inquiries about the process, application essays and ECs (since they seem to help you stand out better). I know the essays are a big part of the application, it helps determine how different you are from the hundreds of people who are applying too. I also know that ECs in and outside of school show off you personality makes an impact too.

Anyways, here are my questions…

Is there less competition for transfer students applying in spring since most of the applicants are applying for first year, fall semester?

When is it a good time to apply for the spring semester? I already know when the deadline is but is it best to do it early as possible? I was thinking applying in the summer before my last quarter of school.

I guess the only way to know if to apply, wait and find out. I just really want to attend this school (first choice) for my last two years and for my intended major (Political Science) and NYC is perfect location for it in terms of schooling, internships, and careers. My interests in Political science is mainly a family cause and inspiration from them and personal interests and passion for it. I already have the first draft of my application essay done along with the supplements that I will be sprucing up and getting it checked at school by teachers I had and staff. I feel like it’s too early to be worrying over it. lol

I’m in the same boat as you… I am also looking to transfer to Barnard College in Spring 2013 because I hear there is a better chance of getting in mid-year (less applicants). I wanted to try out the college campus type school and I’m just not happy here. I always wanted to go to Barnard but then changed my mind last minute and am regretting it. Now that i’ve tried the “real college” experience and didn’t quite love it I am ready to jump right into the city and I can’t wait. I’m so nervous about whether or not I will get in just like you are…but I guess if you have a good GPA in your current college and have a lot of things you are involved in on campus you have a good shot. Good luck to you!

I hate to do this on here. I am a sophomore at GW, and have absolutely having the worst time of my life for the past year and a half here. I desperately making a change by transferring out following this semester.

It is really difficult to know where I stand in chances regarding transfer admissions at my schools of interest. I have been a research intern at the National Institutes of Health for the past year and a half…an intern at Rutgers medical school for the past two years…as well as strong in my very courses…I’ve been taking half my courses at Georgetown because I hate the academics and environment at GW THAT much. I am hoping to get professor recommendations from a very close professor in the psych dept., as well as the chair of psych. dept at GU. Additionally, my principal investigator in the lab (very reputable) is willing to write a recommendation as well. But, I feel like something very significant is lacking within my life: academic and social camaraderie.

I took a gap semester my freshman year where I volunteered in Nepal.
My hs GPA was 3.8 (IB/AP), three sport varsity athlete, numerous EC involvement, and international exchange studies abroad. My SATs were pretty solid 1700, but definitely under the average for the mean of applicants accepted.

In college, I am apart of the pre-med fraternity, Best Buddies, DC Reads, and Triathlon Team. My college GPA is a 3.65. I bombed chemistry last year but I do not intend to pursue sciences at the moment…which is why I am looking towards smaller liberal arts schools for transfer. I’ve done summer classes at Johns Hopkins (last summer) and Tufts University (the summer of 2011), and earned A+'s. I’ve volunteered at DC Soup Kitchens and shadowed a few Johns Hopkins physicians while I was participating in a biomedical research program there last summer. I am afraid they will see my C- in chemistry and that will ruin my chances.

What do you think my chances are? I intend to apply to Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Smith, Wellesley and Sarah Lawrence. I would love to hear any opinions you have and advice regarding my pursuits. Should I lower my reach schools?
