GENERALLY speaking, the stats thing is pretty true, though. My friend works in USC admissions and could vouch for it, and of the spring admits I’ve talked to, they ALL had lower scores and said themselves that they were underqualified, in comparison to the fall 2009 class. Maybe your sons/daughters were missing something else - like a stellar essay - which is what got them a spring admission, rather than in the fall. Plus, you can’t really bring up CC stats because we all know that CC is NOT a true indicator of the majority of USC applicants/acceptees. It’s a pretty selective group.

wanderlusting - I feel like you’re baiting us, and I’m trying to resist Not sure what you mean about not bringing up CC stats. There was quite a lot of info on CC for the class of 2012 that supports what several of us have said. (Hi Rodney - Good to see you!) Sure, that’s not everyone who was admitted for spring, but probably more than the number of spring admits you’ve spoken to personally. While your contacts may have admitted they were underqualified, that doesn’t prove your vast generalization.

As far as I know, there’s no data that would settle the debate, but it would be really nice if you could hold back. Lots of qualified applicants are going to be offered spring admission, and I don’t see any reason to put them in your “underqualified” box. Isn’t a little encouragement better, as long as they hear the stuff that really matters (i.e. the housing difficulties and social drawbacks)?

Can a spring admit still join a frat? Do they rush in the fall or the spring? Can a spring admit defer to the following school year and start in the fall? Any insights are welcome. Still trying to get our minds around this spring admit option.

Fraternities have rush in the fall and spring, but sororities only have it in the fall. So guys wanting to join a fraternity definitely have that option open to them if they start in the spring, this would pretty much erase the negative part of trying to make friends half way through the year.

FauxMom, I was just trying to say that CC doesn’t depict the average USC (and college, in general) applicant across the board. The site attracts a lot of the higher scoring students and therefore cannot be a true indicator of college applicants. Look at the colleges that get the most posts/discussion here - are they the average, middle tier institutions that the normal American student goes to? No. These are the top tier universities, and the people who post on CC, the students who obsess over _____, are the top, top tier applicants. CC attracts the small, top percentage of applicants; at least that’s how it was when I was applying to college. (Last year.)

Hence, when you all bring up, Oh, look at last year’s stats for spring admits - they were all uber qualified for admission - that’s true. I’m not going to argue with that. BUT, you honestly have to account for the fact that the students with the average scores (but still get accepted) are not posting on the site. I made a generalization, yes, as I’ve not talked to over 30 spring admits, but there’s a reason why SO many people I know go, “Oh, he’s such a spring admit” when X or Y opens his/her mouth to speak. And I definitely don’t hang out in one small, social group. Then again, we’ll never know until USC posts statistics, so whatever.

I’m not trying to put down people or be a pessimist as USC definitely doesn’t have the capacity to offer all of the students they want to for fall admission. I’m just trying to be real here. Wouldn’t you like to know what the real social scene is like? Wouldn’t you know what you’re walking into before you spend the next 4 years of your life here? I would never hold back the fact that USC has quite the partying scene or if you don’t go to football games, people will look at you funny. There’s lots of politics involved in college admissions, and let’s face it, USC doesn’t have the reputation of being the most honest university around… Football? Basketball? There’s a reason why MANY people hate USC. We’re essentially the Yankees of colleges - if you don’t go here, you hate us. And I get it.

But maybe I just stumbled upon all the spring admits who happened to be under qualified, legacies or whatnot, which is possible. But seriously, one of them asked me if R came before S, and another didn’t understand the basic concept of economics where price goes up, demand goes down. As someone with actual personal experience with spring admits, it’s hard not to roll your eyes sometimes and the fact that I haven’t met a spring admit to prove me wrong makes things questionable for me. Just throwing my opinion out there, since it’s one that’s usually never discussed here (I’m Greek, wishes college could exist without school work, drinks a lot) but is very visible on campus. CC is filled with select scholarship kids, while I’m the ordinary USC student.

fantastic. now i feel insanely horrendous and second-rate for being a spring admit. maybe i’m a spring admit for a reason. whatevsss.

Well, I was accepted to the SCA as a Spring admit, and it was not because my application was less than average in any way. It remained incomplete for a long time, and they only started reviewing it in March. The slots had been filled up by then.

Well, I am a spring admit and I was able to attend welcome week concert. it was pretty sweet. they had ra ra riot. and I am allowed to attend football games. I’ve made plenty of friends and I will surely make more at the mid year orientation, seeing that I am very sociable. dorms or apts, I don’t mind. i much prefer an apt. and i am very interested in clubs and organizations. maybe even sororities.

wow i don’t remember when i started this thread anymore…its cool to see it still active
well it looks like i got what i ended up asking about… Spring
but it took a while…i got rejected
appealed
and then spring
now i just have a few months to go…basically dont give up if u really want it

Which band played this year?

I’ve heard the same thing as what wanderlusting said in regards to the stats/spring admits thing…
A family friend is part of the admissions board at USC and said that in general, the spring admission is a way to manipulate USC’s us news ranking. But there are many exceptions… he was very suprised that I was offered spring rather than fall admission when he heard my stats. He said it was probably because of the major I applied to (political science, which is a really good program at USC).

I haven’t heard anything from USC about housing yet, but I’m actually hoping to get put into upper-classmen housing rather than somewhere like Trojan Hall. I’m at a different uni for the semester now, and I’ve had enough of freshmen residence hall life. But that’s just me…

I think I am actually one of the lucky ones. I just got my housing assignment today and I got my first choice which was a 2-person studio at Parkside Apartments. I wasnt really up for a dorm because I prefer having a kitchen to cook some of my own meals than to eat just what someone else cooks. Plus, my parents want me to save money by cooking for myself and at the same time cook healthier.
For those who don’t get good housing, I recommend looking around and posting information around asking for any good housing. I know people are rejecting some of their housing and looking for anyone to sublease their housing. There are plenty of people with good housing who are actually looking for people to take their places. You just have to look.

As for friends, I made plenty of friends who are also spring admit just through Facebook and I know I’ll make more at my orientation this December. I’m pretty sure I’ll make even more when the semester starts and by fall of 2011, it wont even matter that I started at Spring because I’ve taken classes at a junior college and I am also planning to take some at USC during the summer. I saved a lot of money this fall semester by doing so.
