Hi, I've applied to USC for 2010 Fall Undergraduate Admission. USC is everything that I want. It's my complete dream school. Unfortunately, I messed up at little with my GPA for the first part of High School. I've heard that they do Spring Admission. Does anyone know the stats for this? If they are really considering accepting me, but ultimately can not, do you think that they will offer me Spring admission? If anyone has been admitted for their Spring semester, can you please post your stats? Thank you so much!

(also, I called yesterday, and they are still in the process of viewing my application. Is that a good or a bad sign?)

Not true. My son was a spring admit and our family has absolutely no connection with USC. He was admitted on his own merits. I also spoke with many parents at the orientation for the approximately 300 spring admits and not a one was “connected” with the university. They weren’t alums, or donors, or faculty, or whatever it is you are attempting to say.

Just to clarify - if you applied for next fall’s entering class, USC could offer you admission for the spring? You don’t have to specifically ask for spring, they will automatically consider you for spring 2011 admission if you applied for fall 2010? I am happy to go in the spring if that is my only option, but want to make sure I don’t have to do anything specific in order to be considered for spring admission.

My understanding is that they use spring admission as sort of the overflow pool for kids they really want to admit but for some reason are not as high on the list as the fall admits. You will be considered for this automatically, if you don’t get regular admission. It’s somewhat like how other colleges use a waitlist, but the good thing about USC’s approach is that you’re guaranteed to go there, just a little later.

My son was a spring admit a few years ago, with a SAT of 1600/1600, high AP scores, National Merit, and a 3.5-ish GPA from a rigorous prep school. But he applied to the SCA, so felt lucky to get in at all. In the end, around mid-May, he was invited to move up to fall admission. He was not legacy or any other special connection.

My D’s friend was a spring admit at USC. Don’t know her stats & she didn’t have any connection to USC. She ended up going to BU instead because her folks wanted to start in the fall instead of waiting until the Spring.

I believe USC wants the student NOT to start school if they’re going to be a spring admit and can do a “mini-gap” program instead of starting any school.

Basically, what I meant is to do what other folks plan to do for a “gap year,” but since you’d have a bit less time to accomplish it, it would be an adapted “mini gap year.” Some of the things involve volunteering/internship in something you’re passionate about, being active in the community in an organized program, teaching English in another country.

^^ We know several spring admits who chose to attend California cc’s to get some GE reqs out of the way. The Cal cc’s have articulation agreements with USC so transfer credit is pre-approved that way. This means the spring admits do not have to trail their fall-admit peers in units. Although, many kids have AP credits to fill this gap, too.

My D was a transfer from a HI CC to USC & started as a spring admit after 3 semesters of CC. Even tho there was no articulation agreement, most of her credits have transferred. I would be sure to clarify with USC about which courses will and will not transfer so you’re not disappointed or surprised (even with the articulation agreement).

I applied for Fall of 2010, but got Spring 2011.

It seems as if I didn’t do enough extracurriculars (school is my main focus, though I do have some volunteer work, just not even close to some people I know).

Here are my stats:
GPA: 4.52 (Straight A’s, so unweighted is 4.0)
SAT I: 2060 (770 Math, 650 Reading, 640 Writing)
SAT II Math: 770
SAT II Literature: 700

My intended major is Math, which I think might be obvious. I only have one AP from tenth grade, which I scored three. Most of my classes in the past two years have been college classes at a local community college. What do you think is their criteria for Spring Admit?

I have no connection to the University and am a first generation college student.

I was admitted there for this spring and my family has absolutely no connection. I also dont have any merit scholarship and I’m a first generation student. My family comes from Mexico.

Spring Admit - starting there this January.

GPA W: 4.2 UW:3.9

SAT: 2190
SAT II: US History: 750 Lit: 730 French: 720

No connection with USC.

As for USC not wanting you to go to a different college first… I talked to admissions staff members and they said that I absolutely could do that. So I’m at Tulane for the semester before I go to USC. Also, if you’re admitted for spring ( I guess it would be 2012 in your case), then you can defer enrollment to fall of 2012 - I was really close to doing that. That way you could start in the fall, just a year later.

Im a spring admit starting in January
To answer these questions…I asked my admissions director why ppl get spring
his straight forward answer:
USC uses spring admits to admit people the like and want to come to the university, but have lower stats (but probably higher extracurrics and stuff they like about u)
therefore…to not ruin their rankings (and numbers) they give people who don’t have the highest stats spring. If theres room after every1 pays the deposit, they use spring admits instead of a waitlist, and bump some ppl to fall

I got in off appeal. Apparantly my stats were better than some ppl i know who got in fall, but in the end, since i got admitted in mid-may, there were not that many fall spots left, so they gave them to the spring admits with the highest stats (or good followup letters) and gave me spring.

I have NO CONNECTION to USC. first trojan in my family.

It definatley sucks this semester when every1s starting college w/o u…but im saving 1/2 a years tuition, i still go to sc for parties and stuff on weekends, and im taking easy easy easy easy GE’s at a community college (i hear writing 140 can ruin ur first semester at sc…and thank god i dont have to take it now)…i got a job, doing some good extra curriculurs to start out with a strong resume, and making the best out of these lemons (i actually kind of want to thank my admission director for springing me)

Plus, im meeting a lot of spring ppl…and the game on saturday was soo much fun… definitley dont turn down sc cuz u got spring, but do keep in mind other options cuz starting a semester late does have its down falls.
