Hey there. I have a strong interest in biomedical engineering that I would love to pursue at NC State. The only problem is that NC State's engineering school doesn't accept spring applicants. So, I chose to apply for Biochemistry (already accepted) due to its similarities to BME, then transfer into engineering next fall. I'm having trouble figuring out the easiest way to go about this. Does anyone by chance have experience with transferring into an engineering program at NC State from a different major? I understand that engineering students take general engineering their first year, so is it possible that I could transfer into this next fall? Or would I have to wait to have enough credits to apply for BME specifically? I do plan on calling around the school a bit after this weekend when I have more thought out questions. Something else I should mention is that NC State really is the school I want to go to, and have wanted to for some time now. But this major is something I'm very interested in, and if I can't get into the program at NCSU it may affect my decision to go there. If you have any input on this, please get back to me. I apologize if this post was a little messy. It's almost 4 AM and this has been driving me crazy. I'm just looking for any outside opinions. Thank you. I am a Freshman btw

Contact Dr. Lianne Cartee at 919.515.6726 she will let you know what you have to do to get into biomedical engineering. They have their own rules about getting in. All engineering majors are the same the first year and the classes will work for both degrees. After your first year you can apply for Change of Degree Application/Audit. Get good enough grades and you are in.

You can always wait till fall and enter directly into the engineering program and take a semester off or take some classes at the local community college to save some money.

@nealinnc thank you so much for getting back to me. I actually did end up talking to Dr. Cartee over the phone. She was very informative and helpful. It seems that the easiest way is what you mentioned- to wait until the fall to apply directly into the engineering program, take first year classes, then apply for your specific engineering major. Unfortunately for my case, transferring into engineering from another major is very difficult. For anyone else possibly in the same boat as me- keep this in mind. The admission office actually controls how many transfer students are allowed into engineering specific majors, not the engineering department itself. And, the number is very low. For BME, I think only 6 or so transfers can be admitted for the fall. The good thing is you can apply for engineering specific majors multiple times a year- fall, spring, and summer if I’m not correct. I was informed that BME is one of the most selective engineering majors at NCSU. You are eligible to apply once you have completed Calc I, Calc II, CH101&102 (Chemistry), and PY 205&206 (Physics). If you want hope at getting into BME, you should have a GPA of 3.5, although I was told it should be more like a 4.0. The essay part of the application was omitted, so admission relies heavily on your GPA in those subjects. Something else I didn’t mention is that when you apply for an engineering specific major, you can apply for 3 at a time. So it looks like I will be busting my butt to get into engineering. If you’re set on pursuing engineering at Nc State, I would definitely recommend applying in the fall. The first year engineering program seems great for figuring out what you want to study, and the steps to enter higher level classes is quite simpler than coming from another major. I hope this cleared up some questions for anyone that might have needed it.
