spring Break visit

We are visiting Clemson next week during dd's spring break.

The itinerary for the day is:

9-10 visit Dr Kuehn, Chair of History dept (DD's intended major)
10- 11 -- D sit in History World War II class with Dr. rich saunder
11:30- 12:30 meet with Ricki Shine from Calhoun Honors College (unfortunately, DD didn't apply for admission, so will now have to wait until Spring 2011 to be in Honors)
12:30- 1:30 Lunch / visit bookstore
1:45 campus tour

Will that give Dd a good look and feel for the campus? Any other sugestions? Clemson is in Dd's top three choices (UCLA also in top three --our stateship Univ--but no scholarship).

We have a OOS waiver at Clemson, and D likes what she has seen on Clemson's website. We are hoping against hope that she might be awarded a little more.

We are also visiting Univ of Alabama during this trip, and DD has full tuition scholarship there.

Last question, would a S Cali kid be bored at Clemson because it is a smaller town and less to do? DD does like nature, but I am afraid she might be bored for four years at Clemson as it won't have the malls, movies, amusement parks, etc that S cali has and that she has grown up with.

we will be visiting next Wed April 14. . .any events or activities that will be going on at Clemson that we can see?

6:30 PM Baseball game vs. Western Carolina at Doug Kingsmore Stadium (i think tickets are $10? for non-students)

That week is international week so Bowman Field will be filled with flags from different countries.

4-9 PM in the University Union is Veggie Fest ([Clemson University - Event: One World Project: Veggie Fest - Master Calendar](<a href=“Events Calendar - Clemson University”>Events Calendar - Clemson University))

7:30-9:30 PM There’s an independent film playing in McKissack Theatre ([Clemson University - Event: Southern Circuit Independent Filmmakers Series - Master Calendar](<a href=“Events Calendar - Clemson University”>Events Calendar - Clemson University))

8-10 PM Clemson Players will be putting on the play “Betrayal” at the Brooks Center ($10, [Clemson University - Event: Betrayal - Clemson Players - Master Calendar](<a href=“Events Calendar - Clemson University”>Events Calendar - Clemson University))

That’s all I know for now, there may be other events announced between now and then (and I’ll try and remember to let you know if I hear of anything)

Other things you can do:

-Visit the South Carolina Botanical Garden
-Get ice cream at the '55 exchange in the Hendrix Student Center
-Eat at the dining halls (Harcombe, Schilletter, Clemson House)
-Visit Fort Hill (John Calhoun and Thomas Green Clemson’s house)
-Go see the football stadium and Howard’s Rock
-Check out the recreational facility/bowling alley in the Union (called Edgar’s)
-Check out downtown

Other than that, I think you have a pretty great visit planned out! If I can do anything to make your visit better (show you something etc…), definitely let me know!

As for your daughter, I will say that as from Boston, it definitely has been an adjustment from big city life to small town Clemson. My biggest advice to her is that if she wants to come here and not be bored is to GET INVOLVED ON CAMPUS!! Join a sorority, join the sailing club, outdoors club, business club or whatever… I’m very involved in a few student organizations and that has kept me very busy while having some fun too! If she loves nature, join the outdoors club or sailing club or triathlon club or play a club sport. I’ve gone on several hikes with the outdoors club this year and I would do sailing club but I don’t have time for that. There are actually tons of malls and a movie theatre just 20-25 minutes down the road in Anderson and the CAT bus can get you there if you’re determined (though it is a pain since the bus only runs once an hour). You’re definitely going to have to know someone with a car or have a car if you want to go to a mall or movie theatre (luckily though Clemson plays a lot of recent movies in the theatre in Hendrix, we’ve had everything from Sherlock Holmes, Blindside, The Proposal, Twilight play this year and Avatar is coming next friday!)

Kari (Kraziespaghetti) is an avid baseball fan – she is watching an angel game as I type this and is going to an Angel game tomorrow night ( and went to both an Angel game and Dodger game with her sister and their dad/my hubby during Spring training).

How do we get 1 adult and 1 youth ticket for that evening?

Also, is going to the campus led tour with a bunch of other people worth it, or should I try to find a student who would show us around?

Lastly which dorm for lunch would give Kari the best “sampling” of dorm food?

I would definitely go on the campus-led tour. It’s a lot better than I could give a tour haha (was thinking about doing it next year though but i dunno if I have enough time)

Do you mean dining hall? I’m actually impartial to all of them, my personal favorites are Schilletter and Clemson House but I know people have said that Schilletter is the worst dining hall (apparently I have bad tastes in food?) and Harcombe is the best? I’ll take a survey of my friends and I’ll let you know what they think haha

if Kari goes to baseball game that night (sports is a BIG part of her life), we might not do the campus tour since it might take too long – and we want to see downtown Clemson to get a feel of the town as you suggested, Pierre.

Would we get a good feel of Clemson if we just walk around on our own, or is getting the perspective from a tour guide crucial to knowing the campus and the history of the campus?

After the baseball game, we still will need to drive 4 hours back to Birmingham to catch our flight Thursday morning (so that’s why we can’t do the campus tour in the afternoon, and just see the town after the game)

Well if it’s between seeing downtown Clemson and going on the campus tour, I would definitely go on the campus tour. Our downtown is so small that you’ll probably walk through it in 5-10 minutes max haha. The campus tour is a much better way to get to know the school better.

I second pierre on going on the campus tour. The tour really helped my D when she was choosing where to apply. We even slog through drenching rain but it was well worth it. The tour guides are first rate and it is a very thorough and interesting tour. If you really want to get to know Clemson, I highly recommend taking the campus tour.

yeah the tour guides do an amazing job at introducing you to the school and showing you around

PS: it’s always very entertaining eating breakfast and lunch in Schilletter and have tours come in and walk around. I know some people who live on the floor in Manning where the sample room is and they always have thousands of prospective students hanging around their room. (Funny story, once someone I know who lives there came out of the bathroom in just her towel and found a tour group in the hallway).

thanks, if downtown is that small and will only take 5 - 10 minutes to walk around it, then we should have time to do that after the tour and before the game. Is the baseball field far away?

yes the baseball field is relatively far compared to everything else on campus. It’s past the football stadium and past the basketball arena. Here’s a campus map: [url=Campus Map | Clemson University, South Carolina]Clemson University Google Maps/url

I would definitely recommend the campus tour. I went on it a couple times before I decided on Clemson and thought it was very informative. The baseball game should also be a lot of fun , but remember that it’s a Wednesday so there may not be a lot of students there (I live across the street so you may see me there).

As far as things to do, I have never been bored. There obviously aren’t the typical city attractions (Atlanta, Charlotte, and Greenville are close), but there are a lot of local events and outdoorsy things to do. What are some of the things your daughter is interested in?
