For those accepted students who are not within driving distance of BU: are you planning on attending the open house for admitted students? The invitation in the acceptance package was not very specific, but it looks as though this will be a half-day event, culminating in lunch. I don’t want my d to be missing anything, but i don’t think i want to pay airfare for this AND the 2-day orientation in the summer. Things are getting a bit pricey…
What are you all planning?

Also, is there anyone else out there who will be paying full freight at this university? Starting to feel like we are the only ones. And the pricetag keeps creeping up everyday. I actually did the “math”. They give an estimate of $1169 for expenses for the year. That’s like less than $5 per day. Not a very realistic estimate for life in boston :(

I thought about going to the open house for the honors presentation, but I'm probably not going to go now because it's way too expensive and I spent six weeks there during the summer. Very few things will be new to me.

I believe I read that about 45% pay full cost and the rest get merit, financial aid, or both ----similar to most other schools. As far as the Open House, I wouldn't bother if its a cost issue. The summer orientation lasts about 3 days so you get a better feel at that point. Our s was a little turned off at the Honors meeting when he went last year and felt the kids were "nerdy" but that really isn't the case-- it may just be that those were the kids who chose to attend the meeting. Although he is in the Honors Program he is not the type to focus on it so he did not want to go to that meeting to begin with so that could have been why he had that perspective. His first Honors class was an intersection of Math, Computers, and Psychology. He really loved it and the Professors that teach Honors classes seem very committed to working with these students. Good luck.

Thanks all. I think we'll just plan on the summer orientation and skip the april one. From here on in, i do believe cost is always going to be an issue! I hope my d can adjust to that concept :) But the school seems like an outstanding opportunity for her. Just gotta learn to suck it up, I guess (But man, that in-state tuition at our top tier public u is so tempting...)

I am also paying the full BU tuition (thank you Dad). I could go to Penn State for 4 years for less than ONE YEAR at BU... so it better be worth it. I am glad to see that others also have to pay in full.

This is a little off-topic, but I don't know which dorm to choose?!

Are there any other parents planning on staying in the dorms during summer orientation? From dogs' description, it doesn't sound bad. I don't know if BU charges for staying there, but it's got to be cheaper than a Boston hotel!

We can pretty much afford the cost of tuiton even though 43 grand a year just seems like you are throwing money away. I can't see how it can be worth that much. I think college will be a wake up call when i have to support myself without being able to call up parents for money every week.

I attended the open house on 4/15 for COM students. I have always been sure that this was the school for me, but my parents were unsure if the cost was worth it, since I would have received substantial merit scholarships elsewhere. After experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of the campus, the friendliness, and helpfulness of the students and staff, and the top notch program--they were finally sold! I will have loans here, but I will be happy. I also know that I will get a top notch education.

Hmmm... I passed up on attending the UNI open house bcuz of cost/plane tickets. I am kinda regretting it now. But I am still in decision phase, so not unexpected. Of course, I did spend six weeks there ova the summer... it's just that I never really found out that much about just the kids in the program I'll be doing.... -_-
