Thinking of transferring to Uva in the spring and wanted to know some of the pros and cons of starting school in the middle of the year. I’ve heard the whole “It’s harder to make friends and general classes are filled with people who did not do well in the fall.” Is any of this true? Also, if I choose to wait till next fall, I will becoming in as a 3rd year and wanted to know if you can still rush a fraternity as a 3rd year.
Since no one else has answered, I’ll try to give it go. It is best to transfer as early as possible in order to meet all degree requirements and to fit in socially. The quality of the students in classes won’t vary at UVa between the spring and the fall. I’m guessing that it is up to each fraternity whether they want to accept a 3rd year student. I imagine the fraternities that are in need of members would be happy to have you, while other fraternities that are more competitive may be more likely to limit themselves to 1st and 2nd years. There also are some fraternities that are not part of the inter-fraternity council, and therefore don’t have to follow their rules (IF there are any about 3rd year rushees).
