Often the overall is higher because the percentiles vary depending on the subjects. For example, a 90th percentile on the verbal would probably have a lower raw than a 90th on reading, because verbal is conventionally easier (this is only an example, but the theory is the same throughout) which means if your child scored higher in conventionally harder parts, his overall end would probably be higher.
