Ssp

did anyone apply or attend this program? what is it like? is it hard to get in?

I hate to see threads go without responses.

Ssp? What's that?

summer science program

I'm applying. Can anyone share what they wrote for their essays? I'm doing the computer science essay one - but what exactly is computer science? Britannica and Wikipedia give different definitions - is it really the study of computers? Or is it the study of algorithms and problem solving - prodedures that can be done by pencil and paper, but quicker on the computer?

I think understanding the first computers is important to understanding the question. The first computers were not operated by electricity. What common features do they share with today's computers? Input/Outpuit, data processing, computation? Are these the only feautres they share in common?

I did the first one; the computer science is, I think, the things like programming and input/output thing that you mentioned.

do you know if it's really competitive to get into SSP?

What essay did you really wirte? You PM'ed me telling me that you did the one on Rutherford's quote with physics.

As for SSP's competitiveness - it accepted more than half of applying students last year. However, more students are applying this year (I've heard more than 200, out of which 72 will be accepted).

oh, it's not as competitive as other crazy programs with acceptance rate of 10 percent

is it supposed to be a prestigious on still??

ps. and the essay i wrote was on that rutherford's quote; are you wanting the content of the essay??

I'm applying as well. I'm an avid essay editor, so you may PM me the essays if you wish.

SSP, for the number of applicants they receive, is quite pretigious. If you do get accepted, you will have a good program to go to for the summer. Many say: After TASP, RSI, and SHARP, SSP is it. I really can't imagine anything else in 4th position.

Yeah - it would be nice. I wouldn't plagarize - it would kill my application.

Umm, isn't comparing TASP and SSP/RSI/SHARP comparing apples and oranges? Since TASP is more focused on Humanities rather than research? ALso, one must count MathCamp and all the other competitive math summer programs.

Not sure, just reiterating common perceptions. I mean, TASP is really good...

do you think that i'm really at a large disadvantage if i send my app after feb 25?

I'm wondering that too....I'm planning on sending the app around March 15th or so since I still need to work on Garcia and Clark...

Depends on the number of applicants who send their apps in before Feb. 25th. A SSP alumni I know told me there were people got got in after the first deadline.

Is it too late to send the app so that it makes it by the 25th? Also, if you send it after the 25th, is it still better to send it earlier or are they all evaluated equally after that?? What is the change in chances if I send it late? I will be able to complete a MUCH better application if I send it after the 25th, since I just now found out about this program, so what should I do?? Also, my teachers would appreciate it if they could have more time for the recs, even though they all have letters written already....ahhh does anyone know????

send it in after Feb. 25th then. Better to do a good job later, then a bad job now. Besides, they do accept people after Feb. 25th.

Well how much do they weigh accomplishments/stats versus essays? I have pretty good stats, and my main selling point is SW Regionals, but my essays will be bad if I send them in so soon. So you think after Feb 25th then?

yes. do after Feb. 25.

How many SSP threads have been started? =/

I have a quick question though, on the "application supplements" does it mean one page for all the questions combined, or one page for every question? I think the former...

meh, I'd find it impossible to answer these questions all on a single page. oasis, didn't you go to RSI?
