Ssp

ok lets keep this a SSP thread...if there's need I'll open up a "Let's Bash Each Other" thread...

yeh. i wouldnt mind knowing exactly when rsi results come out just in case i need to pick. thats why im so anxious to know.

and did i ever say that ppl who come out of rsi are not great scientists? no. but, unfortunately, i dont pick camps based on how many nobel prize winners come from them.

and third. yes i said rsi doesnt impress me. cuz really, it doesnt. and you're just taking things out of context. rsi doesnt impress me enough to go into an eternal state of depression if i get rejected. you obviously dont quite get what i meant by "getting ur priorities straightened out", which is, in fact, the premise of my argument.

smurf, did u get into ojai or socorro? I think many ppl got full ride this year because of that one observatory donating alot..

Ladros

u ppls' obsession w/ rsi is really grotesque.
oh sorry. i'll rephrase, "i'll reject rsi in a heartbeat NOW, since i know it just seems so frickin overrated.."
so what, i'll take the dare.
really, becuz of ure depiction of rsi, i must ask, who in the world does rsi think they are?..you're just giving rsi an bad impression. as if they're some institute thats too prideful and enjoys rejecting people left and right....sigh..

i never said rsi isnt as good as it is. but i dont sell myself to summer programs. they're there to help me. not make me. ive said it before, and i'll say it again: i. dont. need. rsi.

ojai

Have fun if you go man. SSP is really something. I know you'll like JPL if your that type of sci/tech guy.

Ladros

for christ sake, let's drop it. we'll just have our laughs later when you do get rejected, and trust me, you will. :D

all SSP wants is its participants money.

first off, how is the full ride 4800?
everyone only has to pay 3200.....and if u get full ride the max they give u is 3200, and airfare of like up to 260 or something

ssp doesnt just want money, i kno a ton of people who got full rides (myself included)

edit:however static, i understand why you're angry, no one should ever bash rsi seeing as how its such a prestigious program

honestly, i'm not angry because she bashed it. i mean after all, we're all entitled to our own opinions. but the fact that she has to say that she will reject it to inflate her ego is a bit condescending. It makes other people who got rejected feel patronized.

yeah i know, that's how i felt when i read it too, but i got here a bit too late to directly comment on it
o well smurf, wherever you end up going, i should hope that you won't try to boost your own ego by telling people the other places you got into etc. etc.

Smurf, sometimes you make me ashamed that I'm your friend >.>

Anyway, too bad I won't be meeting Ladros and JD at SSP. I can't wait till summer!

smurf, if you do get into rsi, i think you should still go to ssp.
though rsi is probably better in several ways, i think ssp will be more fun.

cheers!

Hey Everyone..
I'm pretty new to CC, but wanted to get your guys opinion on this... Well just yesterday I got my acceptance to the Socorro SSp program, and alos got a 2,000 scholarship to go there.. But I've been thinking about the program and it seems to be pretty much based on Astronomy and Earth and Space. I'm not that big of a fan in those subjects, and I'm not sure whehter I would want to spend that much of my summer doing something which I already knwo I dont like.. Then I got an acceptance letter to te Garcia Reseach Institiute in NY... That program deals more with chem and bio.. etc.. but I don't know how good that program is.. like is it well known.. have you guys ever heard of it before... I need to make a decision to ssp (prestigious, but I'm not that big of a fan of space) and garcia (??,, I like chem and bio) What do you guys think??
By the way.. I'm a sophomore, and I'm in precalc.. so ssp does admit sophs who are in precalc(just in case neone cares.. haha))

Ok.. THanks a bunch! :)

RSI and SSP are both great programs to spend your time in; let's not bash each other based on prestigiousness of each program or any of that sort..

BhangraKid, i have a simple advice for you: Follow my your heart tells you!

Prestigiousness doesn't matter as much as what you are passionate about; do what you would like to do; if ssp isn't the right program for you, you would be better off doing other things...

Thanks for the advice :)

yea bhangrakid, do what you want to do
colleges would much rather see you pursue your passion than go to a program you thought was more "prestigious"
btw, congrats on getting into socorro, maybe we'll see each other or maybe not, just hope u follow ur heart!

Yes, congradulations, bhangrakid---I got into socorro as well. SSP sounds REALLY fun---but I dunno, if you're a chem/bio person (and believe me, I love chem and bio) the other thing might be more your type of program.

But if you do decide to try ssp, I will tell you that even though, on the surface, astronomy might not seem that fun...it can be. You might wonder, "What's the purpose of studying these stars, planets, etc. that so far away? I'll never come into contact with them." But when you get into astrophysics, and math, and stuff, and are really researching astronomy...it's just FUN, you know, in the same way that doing theoretical math is awesomely fun (at least for me) just because of how delightful problem-solving is. It's like, you don't care if it's useful or not (and don't get me wrong, some astronomy is really useful)...it's just that it's so riveting!

My long tirade on astronomy might have been pointless to you, I'm not sure. Maybe it's just be trying to persuade you to go to socorro, 'cause I know I would see you there... ;-) Go to the program you really feel fits you.

I would love to IM any of you...my name is (don't laugh) wahwahforever on msm. I don't have aim or yahoo...but isn't there a thing where you can just open a window from aim's website without downloading anything? I'd love to chat with you some time, Ladros...j_d as well... I'm desperate to obsess about ssp!

BhangraKid, did you have previous research experience? Perhaps that may tip the scales - while I may be above average, I have lived a pretty secluded life and have never had a chance to really touch anything scientific.

Congratulations, by the way.

Would you be kind enough to e-mail me your application to simfish@gmail.com? Perhaps essays - or teacher recs may have helped you tremendously.

hey bhangrakid, join the gang! Heres my opinion on your choice: If your instincts tell you to go with the chem and bio one, then by all means, go for it! I think I am similiar in that my aspirations revolve around bio, not around astronomy. But I think this is turning over a new leaf, and hey, like the program says, you may start to like astronomy. If you don't, then you know where your heart truly lies. One reason I didn't apply to NIH was that it seemed kind of boring, like you don't get the interaction you would at SSP. I mean, 6 weeks with ppl like tweet and J-D? how cool is that. Alright, good luck with it all and if you go SSP, then there's 4 from CC that are going! 1/9 of total!

mary, i am not sure aim supports msm. i'll just go dl msm or something i guess. I really want to get to know some of the people who are going before I meet them in person. It will be like this huge revelation. Okay talk later.
