Jackson Laboratory SSP (2014)

yo guys, just curious if anyone else was applying for this. i think i have my app all set, seems pretty straightforward, no cv or anything required huh? seems weird not listing prior research experience or test scores or anything. anyways I'm a college freshman, definitely curious whether they prefer high schoolers or undergrads or how that breaks down. i feel like i don't know very much about this program so any info anyone has to share is always appreciated. good luck yall

1/3 of the participants in the program are high schoolers. I’m a high school junior applying. How much weight do they give to the essays, you think?

Wait, is this the Jackson Lab in North Carolina?

Haha it’s a different Jackson Lab, in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Any tips on the first essay? What “interests” are they referring to?

High school senior here. Wondering if I should apply to this, because it means I’d have to skip graduation (and my val speech too…). Any opinions? (then again, that’s assuming I get in…)

I personally would skip graduation for this, even if that means forgoing the Valedictorian speech. I’m really excited for decisions in March, even though I know I’ll likely be rejected. I still submitted my application though because you never know unless you try.

Does anyone know if we were supposed to recieve a confirmation email after the app is complete (rec letters submitted, too?). I know both of my teachers sent their recommendations before the deadline.

Note: I did receive an email after I submitted my portion of the app. I’m just wondering if anyone got one after their app was complete.

I got a confirmation email for submitting my portion of the app as well. I don’t think they send out confirmation emails for completion of the entire app with rec letters.

Ok. I just assumed they didn’t, but I didn’t know for sure.

I didn’t realize how hard it was for rising high school seniors to get in…the 2012 thread said only about 5 got in. Can anyone who has been there confirm this?

Earlier in the thread a user mentioned that about 1/3 of the participants are high schoolers, which I think is accurate. I also thought I remembered seeing that there were 30 or so people last year, so about 10 high schoolers. It would make sense if half were rising seniors and half graduating seniors, so 5 actually sounds about right.

Has anybody heard back from JAX yet? Last year they started sending out acceptances in the beginning of March…

I’ve been checking this page everyday to see if anyone has gotten in! I guess a lot of people applied this year… :frowning:

haha @ankwen me too! i hope something comes out next week!

sooo I’m gonna get my Caltech rejection and jax rejection at the same time lolz

I’ve heard back from them that I’m a finalist for a fellowship at their Genomic Medicine facility in Connecticut. I think I’m doing a Skype interview sometime this week. I don’t know if this means I’m out of the running for the main fellowship program in Maine? Haven’t heard anything on that front.

Hey litotes, I’ve also applied to the program this year. I didn’t receive the email about the Farmington internship, but then again, I also checked off the box that said “no preference” and also, my essays were strongly geared towards interest in proteomics, not genomics. Do you remember what you selected on the app with regard to Maine vs. Connecticut? Also, did you learn anything useful from them during your interview about when the first round of emails comes out? Best of luck to you.

The rejections were already out by this time last year!

Yes, but so were the acceptances. In any event, last year’s decisions were scheduled for mid to late March. This year, they only said late March. Additionally, I wasn’t expecting any emails from them over the weekend. I’m going to start checking diligently tomorrow.

It would be helpful to hear from anyone else who has heard from them already. If you have, please help us all out!
