Ssp

Dang, I expected Durran to be accepted, as he had an astrophysics class. Shouldn't feel so bad then - though it's official I won't apply to SSP next year because I'm going to college through early entrance.. Yeah - rahrah and Bhrangakid had Intel ISEF so that got them both in.

cool, simfish, are u graduating this year then as a junior??? did you already get into a college?

-edit: actually i see that it says class of 2009 of u of washington; congratulations!

It's weird though, because smurf applied last year and got a deferred admission (for this year) and his stats were pretty horrible.

LOL sigh - you're saying that about your friend.

Thanks kimjim - I'll be dropping outof high school after my soph year ends to go to college.

WHich is why the system of deferring admissions is unfair. WHat if Caltech had done that to juniors who applied? (yes, juniors can apply to Caltech, though the prerequisites that you must be godly)

hey..my stats are not "pretty horrible"....
just cuz it'll have like..entertainment value..for..say, the RSI adcom...
just cuz..they'll prob use my app for scrap paper...
doesnt mean its horrible.

id say..its mildly decent....with a few rough edges...well..ok, a lot of rough edges..

think through graduating early.
it is possible you will change as a person and will want to be with people your age and feel out of place.
it's possible you might not change

Hey Durran - you may have been rejected due to that rec from the computer science teacher. I asked Bowdon if my computer science teacher could write a rec and he said no. However, my class was C++, so the situation might be different if your course was labeled computer science...

It's dropping out early, not graduating early. :p

I don't think I'll feel out of place: the program accepts 34 other students.

I never thought of that. You may right actually. Programming (Java) is actually listed in our math department.

But I didn't have a choice really, I found out about SSP only about a week before deadline and my physics teacher was out sick for a long while when a virus was going around. Since I live at school and all my previous science teachers are back in my hometown, there was nothing else I could have done.

But I'm not sure that was enirely the reason. Maybe they just accepted too many people in the first round, or I just didn't have the stats. All I sent in were PSAT scores... Oh well, what's done is done. I'm going to make the most out of my summer anyway.

They said that they would prefer the hard sciences (bio, chem, physics) but they still took my comp sci teacher's rec.

Oh... Bowdon just said "no." He was giving one word answers to my questions. I think he was annoyed after my asking all of these stupid questions to him - though fortunately, my clumsiness in dealing with my SSP app taught me a lot when it came to an app of far greater importance - the one for entering college early.

when did you complete your college app? after ssp?? or did you plan ahead to "drop out" early?

The deadline date was March 14, I completed it on March 13. At that time there was a chance I would have turned it down for a shot at Caltech. My Asian parents will not take any college other than Caltech or the local university. However, I have realized that the shot to Caltech took too much of a chance (and would have caused so much strain with my parents) so I ultimately decided to go to university early upon April 2nd, when I received the letter.

are there any more decisions for cc-ers?

Ah, finally a decision! I'm waitlisted.
Stats: soph, 237 PSAT, 1530 SAT, 800/800/800 IIC, CH, PH.
Must've been those horrible essays....

wow your stats are amazing sky
hehe i would have put money on you getting in
don't worry though, there are bound to be people who decline

Thanks,... :)
Well, on the sunny side, I think it's actually nice to know how being waitlisted feels BEFORE college. Plus, for college apps, I'll definitely work on my essays more, er, thoroughly...
As for now, I just hope enough people decline for me to get in.

D-a-m-n.... Better than me - oh poor me I thought my test scores were good enough. ;)

Well looks like I was rejected for a valid reason so then I should stop blaming Asperger's specifically although I'm still not going to mention it in future apps.

Wow, sky. Those are amazing stats, and yet you still got waitlisted?! Hm...

I was rejected...oh well I think it was the lack of test scores, but I didn't feel too bad about it though, after seeing everyone's awesome stats. The only scores I had was the 206 PSAT (which wasn't too impressive). But yeah, it was okay, last year I got my share of acceptances (accepted to two programs), this year I got my share of rejections (rejected by two programs). Just got the mail 2 days ago. I probably should go take more tests and reapply as a junior =)

oasis, where else did you apply?

Also, try UFlorida SSTP if you still want a research prog this summer (Google it). It sucks for us sophomores but I think SSTP isn't that competitive.
