As you've all been commenting, there wasn't much else I could do for stats, and probably my recs were pretty good as well. It had to've been the essays... I rushed through them in an attempt to meet the first round deadline--needless to say, they weren't very good. I went through an extreme bout of shame when I reread those essays a few weeks later...

UFlorida? Hmm. I have to check into that. I only applied to NASA SHARP and SSP, which I was rejected by both. I was accepted into PROMYS last year, and they said I could go if I want this year. I went to Mathcamp last year, so I can go there again as well. I wasn't extremely worried about having nowhere to go this year, so I didn't apply for a lot of programs. I'm still thinking whether to spend more of this summer studying for SAT and SAT II's and get good scores on all of them (I'm aiming for taking the SAT just once...which means I need a 2350+ [meh, not very possible :D]...haha. I'll still probably retake if I get 2300). I still need to take a lot of SAT II's (I haven't taken any yet!!!!). I'm looking into a research program in Israel that only takes 4 weeks...it leaves me nearly 2 months for studying and I still get to go to a program (in Israel too!) so we'll see what happens...or I know the genetics professor at UCSD who is willing to help me conduct a research program over the summer. I need to study for AIME too (got 4 this year)...aiming for at least 7 or 8 next year. So yeah, I still have some possibilities. Where are you going, Simfish?

I'm going to SIMUW (competitive free math program at the UWashington) for summer but not a research program. NASA SHARP and SSP both rejected me as well. As I decided to go to university next year, I decided that a summer program at the local university would be better than research (had I stayed in HS I would be more inclined to choose research so that I could have some shot at RSI/Intel/Siemens). SIMUW is free too and competitive so I expect to get something out of it, although it has a relaxed environment. And I fear starting to play computer games in a relaxed environment like I am doing now... But I'm still looking forward - and maybe impressing profs will provide enough external motivation.

Just to bring this thread back to life...Did anyone get further notice on status? Who else is going to New Mexico? Who's going to Ojai? Who wants summer to start right now so they can go? let's keep posting everyone

im happy that i get to go, but i know im far less enthusiastic about it compared to all of you. haha..i suppose its just cuz ive already been to Sumac last year and had a such a great time there....and dont really think anything else can top it. i miss them all alot..
departure day can get quite emotional at these programs...

yea thats true, but u just gotta remember that the friends you made are not lost forever. especially in our generation where even adults use aim, i keep in touch with long distance friends all the time via aim or yahoo groups.
im fairly excited about ssp, but i dont want to get too excited before it even happens. I would hope that the climax of my happiness and excitement happens while at ssp. i am also setting lower expectations, otherwise the program might disappoint me (im sure it wont, but u guys get my point)

^^^^^ That's basically what I think. Plus, I don't really know what to expect for the social aspect anyway, since I've never been to something like this, though I am looking forward to the material that we will be learning.

you will most likely grow very close with every one there and be extremely sad when you leave.....then after a while you will get over it because you will see your old friends again, and you will still be able to talk with your new friends using the internet!
I'm looking forward to meeting you Sigh, where in Taiwan are you from?

its not "most likely"...its for sure you will get close with people..cuz afterall, you live w/ em 24/7...its hard not to get close.
and no you dont really ever completely get over it....:)
but going as a junior is probably much much better than a sophomore..cuz you only gota wait 1 yr before you can see ure new friends again....(for those of us who live overseas)
2 yrs..is a lil tough. for me it is at least...

taichung, if you know where that is.

wow smurf, i am sensing that you made some really good friends with the people in ur old program...
i think an experience for the overseas people would be different, because there must be some sort of new cultural experience as well as everything else

It will probably be a new cultural experience, though I'm not sure I'm really looking forward to that aspect =P

It will probably be better than our school though, which is an ultra-conservative, not Taiwanese yet not American place.

let's make a list of SSP 2005 attendees
