that's like.... getting deferred from early action...-_-!!

haha yeah if you want to think about it that way :P

Hey rahrah, mind if you hook me up with your application stuff? j.mq.pham@gmail.com

My AIM's off. Thanks.

rahrah, could i see your stats?

The fact that some of you haven't heard makes me wonder if the ones who have already gotten the "so sorry" email just weren't as competitive as those who haven't heard yet. I think they may in fact be waiting to compare the rest of you with the March applicants. Good luck!

Hello everyone. My friend referred me to this board and I wanted to check it out. So im a newb here. Anyways here's a short story. Thursday night (3/17) I was reading this and all the posts about SSP as my first time logging onto college confidential, then suddenly I get this called from Richard Bowden. I applied to SSP before the Feb 25th deadline. He tells me that I got in and etc with full ride. Cool eh?

I see that rahrah has also got in. Wanted to ask, which one did you get into? I got into the Soccoro one, the one I wanted.

Everyone, I got my notification through the phone and I haven't even received an email. So, make sure you have an answering machine. GL to all and it's still early. The real deadline didn't even pass yet.

Ladros

Ladros, mind if you send me what you wrote for apps?

Hi. Um, sorry. Some of the stuff I wrote I would like to keep to myself. If you want to know, my essay was pretty well done I guess. I wrote 1 version. Yes 1, not 5 or 6. I did the second one about the quote from Cicero. Nothing too crazy or anything. If your wondering, I am not one of those Siemen Westinghouse winners or 1600 SATS or the such. I just like science. I didn't write like a cocksure app boasting about programs I've written. Just some down to earth stuff. GL to you.

Ladros

Sorry about the blatant approach there buddy. Yep, just that we're sometimes open here on CC :D.

I'm still waiting...

wait, is everyone who applied by feb 25 deadline gonna be notified?? or is there really a "deferral"??

I hope they send me an email, I doubt SSP would call overseas and I probably won't be at home anyways due to time difference...ack...still waiting! This is torturous.

I think we're deferred =)

congrats Ladros!!!!
im going to ojai, but my friend is going to the one in new mexico. if you meet anyone there named mary, give her a big hug from rahrah. :-)

as for those asking for my stats, i think i posted some earlyer in this thread, and i dont want to share my essays anymore.

toodles!

good luck to the rest of you!
and i think that if you havent gotten a call or an email yet, then the ssp is waiting for the rest of the applications, so that they can compare you to the rest of the applicants.

Cool. I will say hi to your friend. But does she know you as RahRah? Sorry if that is your name. I just don't want to be like hug, "that was from RahRah" and she stares at me like some pervert freak. Anyways, I wanted to go to Ojai one, but like the more I thought about it, it seemed as if everyone would app for that one. I'm in cali so I can go to JPL anytime I like. Living in so cal sucks, so I wanted to leave this place. Plus I had another thing to do after SSP. Seriously, GL to everyone. And I hope I (or RahRah) will see at least some of you during the summer. *wink.

Ladros

To Ladros:

lol! yeah, mary knows most of my screennames. she's awesome! on second thought, i think that you probably shouldn't literally hug her, but say hi or something.

i actually kinda wanted to go to the one at new mexico institute of tech instead of the one at the happy valley school (honestly, who named that?!?), but i had something during june so i had to apply to ojai (the later one).

you said that you got a full ride. i also need practically a full ride to be able to attend. would you mind...uh...telling me your approxamet financial situation? i understand if you dont want to. in that case just ignore me.

and why does living in so cal suck?

Ladros, are you a sophomore or junior?

Congrats rahrah and Ladros! Kinda hard for me to say this after so painful a rejection but now I've recovered.

Yeah - thanks for the advice - I probably won't e-mail. I think I just wasn't very original on my essay and didn't stand out (yeah I wrote one of those other "why I want to go to this program essays" which almost never stand out on their own because everyone cites the same reasons). Other summer progs ask for these essays and the responses are always the same..

Hmm.... A concern. I was thinking that the applicants you've mentioned would be competitive but since they don't have Calc and a lot of others do... Oh well since I've already been rejected I shouldn't worry about it. Hopefully I'll have better recs and essays for my next few summer progs.

In any case, either teacher recs or essays nailed me dead since my other stats were decent. I have pretty good relations with both of my teachers but it took time for my relations with my science teacher to improve after they were strained because I tried too hard to impress him and it backfired and I had many a temper tantrum in his class. And I'm not that exceptional in calculus class either and I sometimes don't finish my HW in time even though I've never gotten anything less than an A on a test.

As for essays, they weren't original and they were hastily done. Even though both probably weren't 't bad, they probably would have lowered my status compared to other applicants with similar stats and ultimately nailed me down.

Hello everyone. I am a junior. Those of you who are a sophomore and get in are really really something. It shows that you beat out all sophomores and juniors who are older and have priority. I remember last year i applied to Stanford's Quest and got finalist. I was top 50 and they only chose 20, so I didn't get in because I was a soph.

RahRah I sent you a message so check it out.

GL everyone once again.

Ladros

ey guys, sorry i didnt post this sooner, but i was at a leadership conference (best four days of my life)

i got in! so happy

good luck to all second rounders!

"In 1999, The Thacher School decided to dedicate its entire campus to a different, larger program. SSP could have simply ceased to exist at that time, but alumni decided that could not be allowed to happen. They rallied to create and fund a new nonprofit corporation, Summer Science Program, Inc., to take over operation of SSP as an independent program.
Beginning in 2000, the Summer Science Program has been held at Happy Valley School, located just across the Ojai Valley from The Thacher School. In 2003 a second campus opened at New Mexico Tech in Socorro. The Summer Science Program is one of the oldest programs of its kind in the world, and the only one managed and largely funded by its own alumni."

this quote is from ssp website, and i was wondering what the "different, larger program" that thacher school decided to dedicate its entire campus to.. why did that school give up hosting for such a prestigious program??? it would've helped the reputation of the school.... does anyone know why??

No idea. SSP despite being relatively unknown, I mean, not as widely publicized is still one of the oldest. Back then the school probably saw SSP as not having as much recognition and wanted to get a better one in. I think now SSP is really coming into its own esp with the tenure it has and the amount of applicants.

Anyways, did anyone receive word yet as to their status? GL to all.

Congrats Juzamm for getting in. I hope that we can get to know each other because I have no idea who you are or where you live or what school you go to. Your name could be Gustavio Chen for that matter.

Ladros

Hang in there ppl, good things happen everyday.

congrats juzam_djinn
