Ssp

whatever! not getting into ssp is not the end of the world. hey but i made it out of "first round" without getting rejected! haha.

uh..im pretty sure its rolling admissions....
so there is no "first round"....

hey guys. i only check cc occasionally and just came across this trend. im a sophomore and i got defered from the program, whose application i did have to overnight to 13 freaken dollars to get it there on time (simfish-- they dont ReJeCt all pre-calc applicants im in precalc: they probably just dont like us much cuz we r sophomores) o well i was hurt, so moving on.. congrats to whoever got in and hope you guys have a wonderful time there. (ill have to debate next year whether to carry over my status and go, we'll see)

quote

Well - i was meaning - that Pre-Calc students had a huge disadvantage in this year's round with such a highly competitive applicant pool. Lack of phsyics doesn't matter that much because non-calc baed physics doesn't tell much but the lack of calculus does put a student behind in the actual program since they'll have to learn the equivalent of Calc BC in a very small amount of time then some multivar too. Last year, it didn't matter that much.

If you're a sophomore with Pre-Calc...well... umm...

Unrelated, but I got an acceptance letter from a summer math program this year so I'm at least going somewhere.

Yay! But it isn't research.

what program is it? i was originally thinking about doing math programs but i see my potential farther in research. umm. and also i had too much sciene research applications to complete as it is, i dont have to time nor patience to do their impossible problems sets. may i ask if it was honors mathworks in texas?

No, it was SIMUW (a local math program at the UWashington). SO unfortunately you aren't eligible.

Lol - I didn't have the patience to go over most problem sets too - although this one's deadlines were so far back before I started mass-applying to summer programs. Anyways the one in Texas doesn't have them so it's a quick application.

o ok i understand

if you got automaticly into caltech's yess and the ssp....which one would you go to and why?

Rahrah...I think I would go to ssp, but I'm not sure. It sounds really awesome and it's longer. But I think you already knew that much... ;-)

Hello, J-D/Ladros/other SSP-ers! I don't know anyone besides those on this forum who are going to the Socorro campus, Ladros...

I can't wait...I've been obsessing over the instructions packet they sent us, in favor of reading over it a thousand times instead of doing homework. :-) Which will kill me if I don't start it sometime today...instead I find myself on this forum :-)

Sophomores: did your letter say you were actually waitlisted, or would be given preference for next year or something like that? Or did it just say "sorry you weren't selected." The two students I know who applied got the sorry letter and are wondering whether to even apply next year. Thanks for any info.

they should apply next year if they really like the program. as juniors, they will have more preference. my letter told me i was deffered and that i didnt have to reply next year, i just had to submit recent transcript and im automatically accepted into the program, should i choose to go is up to me then.

Thanks for the response now0520. Sounds like they really liked your app and just ran out of room. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to apply next year, but a deferral sure would have been nice. I don't know if either of them will have any research by next summer if that matters. One of them is going to Gov. School for science this summer and the other one is doing a Duke math program, so maybe that will help. Did you get an actual letter or just an email?

i got an email first and an actual letter in the mail that was like exactly the email a few days later. they should try to get some research done. i really cant tell they liked about me. i just had an independent research project based on surveys entered in science fair in behavioral. or maybe it was my lab experience (i told them it was in eighth grade) that i said was the grossest thing ive done since it was swabing bathroom doors.

did anyone else get deffered?

They still defer people? I knew they did it in the past but was clueless if they still did it (it's kinda unfair IMO - if the person shows real interest, why not let the person apply again? - rather than to advantage people in more/less competitive applicant pools). Oh well - they didn't like me...apparently - they placed such a huge emphasis on emotional maturity in the app while other summer progs have no sections on that. I But there are more than 10 other summer science programs and I'm sure I'll get into something next year - it just won't be SSP. I actually think I won't even apply next year - since SSP was the first one I got to know really well I also made the most mistakes on it and e-mailed Bowdon so much that he's probably really annoyed with me - I even asked some really stupid questions to him.

So bye bye SSP - I took so much time to get to know you and still am not going to come but oh well - other summer progs can give me a chance at Intel. Perhaps it's good I wasn't too obsessed with astronomy otherwise it would be devastating - I used to be obsessed with it but the obsession faded off and now I'm more into trying to get into Intel so SSP won't help there.

EDIT: Please ignore above message. Grrr...CC's stupid edit rules..

And when there is an emphasis on emotional maturity I am slaughtered. Painfully. My expectation was to be deferred actually so that my emotional maturity could have a year to improve - instead they rejected me outright.

Anyays I suppose Ill wave byebye to SSP, even for next year. I'll still probably apply but it'll be low on my list of priorities - below the 9-10 Intel/SIemens feeders I know. I think research programs aren't that fond of really sheltered nerds like me - math programs are more tolerant of us.

i definetely suggest that all the sophs who got rejected on this board apply next year, wit ur stats, u guys have a great chance when ur juniors, cuz they do give preference to us via seniority...
ssp looks like its gonna be amazing, the thought of living with highly intelligent people and learning these awesome subjects for 6 weeks has hit me like a ton of bricks
i cant wait to meet u fellow cc'ers at socorro!

Hey, everyone who didn't get in some worry. I am sure that if you app next year...you'll have llike 75% chance of getting in.

Tweetletwoot: My goodness...I guess I am not the only one who is spending 2 hours day going through ssp stuff. Even though its still about 3 months away... I can't wait! I have gone through ALL of the sites from ssp alumni and looked at all the pics. Even signed myself up on some of those free pic hosting sites just to look at them. I read the journal of that girl from SSP 03. I have done just about everything. I think I will probably start packing during spring break next week, just to be ready. Are you going to write a nickname (on the personality paper)?

Ladros

lol ladros, look at our post times
thats just freaky
almost like we know each other or something...
