St. Bonaventure/GW Program

To anyone who was at SBU on 1/25, the group interview were conducted by Mr. Chris Brown (Brownie) and another woman. Does anyone recall her name?

good to go, dont need info any more

Does anyone want on comment on the interview experience at SBU this past weekend?
Notifications for GW interview should come out soon!!!

when do GW notifications come out???

Did anyone feel really confident coming out of the first interview?

I heard week of Feb 4 ish

I was offered an interview at GW on Monday, Feb 24!!! Who else?

same here

what are ur guys’ stats if u dont mind sharing?..i got one too

I think imma probably turn down SBUgw…i have a friend whos in it and she HATES it…i mean, sure u wanna get into med school easy but frankly, the timem u spend in ur UG is ur only time to have “fun” and explore urself…after that it just goes downhill in terms of exams and USMLE and board eexams…and other stuff…

thats ur choice, i strongly recommend that you turn it down if you don’t want to go even if you get in because your taking someone else’s spot who would go if they were accepted

@cavaliergirl I truly think it all depends on what you are looking for in undergrad. SBU is not your typical college environment; it is a small, catholic school that is sorta in the middle of nowhere. If you are ONLY going for the program, you certainly will not enjoy your time there. That being said, many people do truly love both schools (SBU and GW) and I think if you know that you would not accept the offer if given it, the most honorable thing to do would be to withdraw. Of course, the final decision is yours. But just think of others who LOVE bonaventure and would jump at this opportunity.

Ive already expressed my terminated interest in pursuing the program shortly after receiving the 2nd interview opportunity. I live literally 20 minutes away from GW and for the longest time I was dedicated to this program but I came to an epiphany that I did not like SBU very much…for the exact reasons you have stated. It is close knit…but too close knit, and aside from that I really dont think that BSMD route is a healthy option for the truly passionate physicians out there. From what ive seen over the past years is that ppl who pursue a dual admissions route cant compete with the much more “educated” tradtional path students because these programs often relieve you of some hassle --such as the MCAT. The intentions of the program aren’t modest either. Like I said I have two relatives who are in the smu/gwu program and both of them had more cons vs pros for the program. basically a rural school liek sbu in the middle of nowhere is a perfect school to advertise such a program so that they can attract smart kids to their institution who would otherwise stick with an IVY league or some other highly ranked college. Other than that…both of my cousins now struggle in medical school because SBU DOES NOT prepare you well for medical school at all (3.6 condition–cmon dude, thats pathetic, and at SBU!!). Although some of you might orgasm at the thought of not having to take the MCAT and having such a easy gpa condition to satisfy you will suddenly find out 5 years from now that you made a huge mistake once you are suddenly beaten with such a competitive pool of candidates who got in GW the traditional path and not through some cheap program. For this reason, SBU, and any other program for that matter, chooses only the very brightest to partake in the program. And even with that, some end up slipping cuz of the laid back conditions of the program. My cousin says that in medical school it gets way way worse and the stress and pressure you put on yourself to do well on tests liek the MCAT is such a huge advantage over the 3% of kids who pursue these dual admissions programs when it comes to board exam or the USMLE. I know everyone has a different take on this matter, but I am very very well acquainted with every side of these programs. My older brother is at SBU now. and two cousins too. They all thought SBU was great. and once she went to GW she knew she was FCKD. and not only that. gwu is a decent avg school…so its tough to get in a good residency. (WEll there is some discrepancy there)

Basically my final point to consider is that the people selected for these dual admissions programs are the brightest of the bright…and for the anything but decent intentions that i noted earlier–a way to increase the schools rep i presume. and that being said, the kids selected for these programs probably score very high on the SAT and have the potential to get in a much better medical school than GWU. So in a sense, this program is impeding your ability to put your strengths and weaknesses to the forefront and really test your capability towards the medical field. Im sticking with UVA ( I got accepted to JHU, Georgetown, Harvard, Princeton). Thing is I am happy with UVA…it fits nicely with my interests and I feel i will be able to truly explore myself here. (thats just me) My only concern is that these programs are choosing very smart individuals who shouldnt be attending because the traditional path in a sense prepares you for the rigors of medical field in the most realistic sense. Your time spent in a dual admissions program is more of a fantasy to escape some of the hassles of applying to medical school which are actually essential to molding you into that perfect physician. At the end of the day, you can do whatever the ■■■ you wanna do,…but just understand that you are gonna be in for some competition as soon as you matriculate to gwu. (especially from SBU) all of my relatives have the “horror” story…but of course any other student would tell me that SBU was great and prepared them well because they are in the program. I get the honest opinions from my own blood relatives and frankly, they aren’t too great. I would go to SBU if i loved the campus but not for the program even if selected. I only applied to 23 of these dual admissions programs to experience interviewing and such. I got interviews at Rochester REMS, Northwestern, etc.

Cavaliergirl… I am in the same position as you are.

I too am withdrawing from SBU/GW after interviewing there. How can anyone give up 4 years of their life to go to school at SBU??? Anyone who has enough intelligence to get into a program like this would see all the negative aspects of St. Bonaventure. I rather go to a top 4 year college and get a well rounded experience. Olean is not the place for me.

@Cavaliergirl and Indiandreams
While it is not nice to trash a program, I do agree with your assessments. No amount of bribes to my daughter was enough to convince her to apply for the SBU/GW program, after a visit to the college last summer. She said exactly the same…“I will take my chances going the 4+4 route, rather than go to SBU”. 4 Years pf my UG is a one time deal and I do not want it at SBU. I guess, it all depends on how badly one wants to get a guaranteed spot in med school.

@cavaliergirl and @indiandreams thank you for sharing your rationale. I personally love the atmosphere and small learning environment that SBU provides. If you are an excellent student, I really believe you can succeed wherever you go. If you work your butt off at SBU, there’s nothing holding you back from succeeding at GW. The students who get into these BSMD programs are the hardest working. What is most important is that you love where you are and are ready to work. I totally get that SBU is not for everyone and is not renowned, but I think it is a very solid school where you can get great preparation for med school if you work for it.

samelsawaf
The point was not that SBU will not prepare you for medical school, but that it is in a town which is so undesireable that no one wants to spend 4 years of their life there.

who here was at GW today???

@actsat2400 I was there today!

lol morning session?
