St. Paul's School Concord NH

oh thank you! Whoopsies. I’m not familiar with that term. No I won’t be a freshie :frowning: Well I’m not even sure if I’ll be a Paulie. Hm. Is that what they call a SPS student? DJ Paulie would have a nice ring to it.

Hi everyone! I’ve been lurking on this thread since last year’s application time but this is my first post…I’m currently a student at St. Paul’s and would be delighted to answer anybody’s questions (either here or via PM)!! :)

Pelican16 you are about to be bombarded with PM’s :)

Pelican16, can you speak about the CHP? My S took the Latin test administered by his 8th grade teacher that SPS sent. The CHP is drawing his interest in SPS. He is very interested in studying both Latin and Greek-- what do you know about the program? What are kids like who are in it? Is it really a program as such or just the kids who take the Classics-- and if you do know how does differ from the Classical diploma at, say, Exeter?

3 PM March 9

I can’t even begin to think about what I’d do if I got accepted, besides sit there and gnaw my nails to the skin. I’d hate to leave what few true friends I have here, and my anxiety disorder wouldn’t help, but SPS sounds so… perfect. Miraculous, even.

What exactly does one do in Chapel? I’m not religious at all, but it’s clearly not an option.

When I went the tour guide explained that they do announcements and sing hymns sometimes. Sometimes students perform or give a speech. There are specific religious services in the Chapel during the evenings. This is all guesswork. I had my tour in August XD

But it’s nothing too preachy? That’s nice. I don’t mind listening to sermons, I just find it… a bit boring, especially since I find it a bit hard to believe.

I can’t wait for a tour!

I’m really excited to hear back from sps in 14 days  I just had my interview last week and I’m hoping it went as well as I felt it did!

Did you go for a tour? The tour guide probablyleft you with an email to contact!

@AmbiD77 me too!!

Hi everyone, I’ve been away from this site for a little while. It looks like the questions have been answered, except the Chapel one. Chapel consists of a hymn, a prayer, a program (speech, musical, etc), and announcements. It’s not always a “sermon”. My DD likes Chapel more than she expected to like it.

Good luck to the applicants!

From the SPS website:

Record Applications Numbers for Admissions

2/23/2013
Applications up more than 10 percent for 2013

A year ago, the SPS Admission Office reported a record number of applicants – 1,430. With the March 9 decision deadline fast approaching (a day early because March 10 falls on a Sunday this year), that number has ballooned more than 10 percent from 2012, with more than 1,580 prospective students applying for admission to St. Paul’s.

“This is a dynamic time at the School,” says Rector Mike Hirschfeld ’85. “The faculty is engaged in unfolding dialogues about teaching and learning in every realm of the School and the experience we provide. I think our visiting families can sense the vitality here. I also believe they see happy kids who are learning in a variety of ways in this community.”

The growth in the applicant pool, says Admission Director Scott Bohan, stretches across all of the demographics, presenting equally among international and domestic students and among full-pay and financial-aid candidates.

“The facilities are in phenomenal shape and our visitors are seeing that combined with an impressive student body,” says Bohan ’94. “They are staying interested after they visit and, when they go home, they are telling others about us.”

Bohan also points to experience and professionalism in the Admission Office, which returned all eight admission officers and all five support staff from 2012, and which implemented a new database that has made the process more efficient for both the School and prospective families.

“It is making the applicants’ experience better,” Bohan says. “We have heard a lot about our communication – people appreciating how we have stayed in touch with them throughout the process.”

Bohan and the admission staff have interviewed 1,700 prospective students and their families – an average of 200 interviews per admission officer, or about 50 per month each.

In addition to the smooth process, Bohan says applicants also have been drawn this year by the year-old Lindsay Center for Mathematics and Science, noting a “significant increase in the students interested in math and science.” The fact that St. Paul’s remains a fully residential, medium-sized school with big-school opportunities is an additional draw, Bohan points out.

“A lot of people are interested in coming here,” he says. “They are seeing what we offer, plus the fact that we do emphasize how being a good person matters. They see that kids are genuinely nice, saying hello on the paths, in addition to being impressive students, athletes, and artists. The School is in a good spot, and people are impressed with what they see.”

Pardon my french, but holy duck adobe. I don’t suppose they’ll still accept the same percentage of applicants this year…

I wonder how the admission outlook has been for the other HADESG Prep Schools this year? Any input from you number crunchers out there?

It is good to see-- SPS had a number of years in the wilderness because of the headmaster scandal a few years back. It seems to have found its direction again, and the new facilities (gym and science center) are impressive.

So mixed bag-- tougher to get into, but a better experience if you go.

Me too. Maybe a new thread about it should be started.

etondad, SPS has been one of the most sought after schools for a few years. I think its admit rate for the last couple of years was right after Deerfield and Andover and yield one of the highest too.

After scandals at certain schools, some super star applicants may choose to attend a difference school. I still think a school will get the same number of applicants, but the quality may be slightly slightly lower or that one all-star swimmer decides to go to Andover instead. I don’t think it’s noticeable, but I do think it happens.

I don’t want to hijack the thread, as this is a SPS thread and despite having a beautiful pool doesn’t offer swimming as a sport, but if anyone has questions regarding prep school swimming, they can PM me.

Anyway, I have always loved SPS and am pleased to see that it is doing well. The kids who graduate are not only academically well prepared but are genuinely good folks. I think its “pastoral” system (not a religious term) is among the best in the States and compares well with English boarding schools which take such things very seriously. There is a reason why Eton and SPS have a joint literary magazine (alas which hasn’t been published in the past few years…)

Oh yeah, if anyone knows when the Edmund Burke Ross Scholarship is announced, that’d be cool to know :D

St. Paul’s is affiliated with the Episcopal Church as are Groton, Kent, St. Mark’s and others.
