Oh FA gurus...
Is it possible for a student who is taking a LOA and wants to take a course or two at a school close to home to get a Stafford loan? He took half the $7500 at school A this fall, and I was wondering if he could take the other half at school B this coming semester. It would cover pretty much all his expenses for the term. He is not officially transferring -- the courses are to keep his language fluency up during the LOA and perhaps get a core science under his belt.

He would be on LOA from school A, going part time to school B spring semester, and would transfer the credits back to school A when he returns in the fall. Assume school A will allow him to take courses at school B.

Many thanks -- CD

You have to be in a program leading to a degree or certificate to be eligible for federal loans. So I would think the student would not be eligible in the situation you describe.

[Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans | Federal Student Aid](http://studentaid.ed.gov/types/loans/subsidized-unsubsidized#am-i-eligible-for-a)

He would be transferring the credits back to his home college (school A) and they would apply towards his degree – it’s just that he is not going to officially transfer to school B, but would like to keep things in motion towards getting his degree.

He has to be a degree seeking student at a particular school to be eligible for aid at that school. Is there anyway he could “transfer” (the school would not have to know he was planning to stay only one semester) and transfer back? Or would that mess up things with the original school?

I am 99.999% sure that he cannot get a loan unless he enrolls as a degree seeking student, but have been known to be wrong even when I’m sure I’m right! Hopefully a real expert like kelsmom will chime in with the other .001%.
