Stanford legacies

anyone know what kind of statistics there are about Stanford's legacy admissions rate?

also, any input on whether Stanford would be a possibility for me if I had

~3.8 GPA (not incl. freshman year, stanford does not request)
-Legacy (yay!)
~720's on SATs, aced essay
-numerous AP's, mostly in humanities, (4's and 5's)

EC's

Black belt in karate
writer for town newspaper
vocal soloist (male)
varsity tennis

This is a bit vague, I know, but curiosity got the best of me =)
Any input/recommendations as to what I should do to increase chances appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

its possible you get in.

You cheapskates and your legacies...even trying as far back as your grandparents. Get accepted using your merit....people who use legacies ought to be slapped across the face. Of course, what with your 720's and 4's and amazing 4 e.c's you don't need legacy now do you?

Take it from someone who got in, give up now. With the level of applicants at Stanford..you WILL be eaten alive.

You have a decent shot. To increase chances, keep working hard in school and pursue any passions you have. Follow EC's that are things you love, rather than things you think you should do to look good.

Thanks, Susan. Do you know if Stanford interviews? And they don't look at freshman grades, do they?

(got a 3.5 freshman year) =(

They don't do interviews

I don't think so, but I'm not certain

they never interview

A Student from my highschool got into Stanford w/ the following Stats:

-Legacy
SAT: M: 650, V: 660, W:700 <--2nd Try, 1st try: 1870
Class President
-500+ hours Community service
-720 US history, 590 Lit
- AP Exams: Euro History 5, US History5,APES 5, English Lit4
EC's:
-She's in a lot of clubs like Key Club, Red Cross, NHS, GSA, Black Student Union (yet, she's the only caucasian member). Overall, it's hilarious because she has never even participated in a single club event/activiety or even bothered to show up to any club meetings. She just pays dues... XD

-Extremely Affluent: She once said, and I quote,"I live in a f.u.c.king castle, beyatch."
-Jewish Lesbian
-Eats Lots of Ice Cream: Her personal statement was about doing homework in bed while eating ice cream; I read it and started crying...trying to hold back a surge of immense laughter building in my esophagus. LOL!
-Class Rank 3/300

Lol!!! She has to be one of the people I would LEAST think would get in...
aside from her astronomically scary class ranking, what a horrible candidate.

maybe i should consider judaism or lesbianism. or just eat a s.h.itload of ice cream =)

I got in SCEA as a legacy

SAT: 2300 (800,760,740)
SAT IIs: 800 US hist, 800 world Hist, 800 Math iic
APS: 5 US hist, 5 Euro Hist, 5 World Hist, 5 hum geo, 5 comp. gov pol., 5 us gov pol.
Class rank: 1/145 (two way tie)
ECs: Founded VMUN confernece (<a href="http://www.vmun.com)%5B/url%5D">www.vmun.com)</a>, Won best delegate award at HMUN, UCMUNC, SMUNC, NAIMUN, Interned for a congressman, founded conservative club at school, founded spanish club at school, member of varsity cricket team, 6th in nation in debate, debate team president

So, I mean, not all legacies are underqualified..

Wow, very impressive. I actually tried debate but hated it. I've heard its very helpful for top ivies, though, especially if you're top in the nation. How the heck can u guys speak so fast while reading a card??

By the way, Steveo68, the affluent Jewish Lesbian I described to you was indeed ranked third in my class. In addition, the second person in rank (not a Legacy) from my school with far more impressive stats, got into Stanford as well (2280 SATI, 4 AP's straight 5's, great EC's). Furthermore, I'm currently ranked number one in my highschool and I also hope to gain admittance into Stanford. If you have time would you take a look at some of my previous threads and tell me what you think about my chances for RD. Thanks. And good luck! =)

steve - I debate policy too (although I'm definitely not top in the nation), and got in SCEA.

Reading speed just comes with practice.

Stanford does not consider freshman grades.

they don't do interviews (thank god for that). and i don't think they pay that much attention to legacies. anyway, you have a good shot, just follow Susan's advice and you'll do fine. try hard not to slack off and do anything that you love to do (as long as it's to your advantage)

i'm a legacy admit and can try to answer any questions you have. the admissions rate is about twice the normal (so i'm guessing about 18-20%???) or so they said on the letter that you're parents will get eventually (the "it's really hard to get into stanford so don't freak out if your kid doesn't get in even though you did" letter). But they said that the percentage of applicants who are legacies out of the whole pool is very small, so how many they admit varies by year.

stanford is one of those colleges that are big on legacy. out of the few early action applicants in our school, the weakest applicant got in. guess why? the student's dad went to stanford.

I heard legacy admit rate was like 25%. and they count graduate school, which is why legacy at Stanford is not as big as, say, legacy at Harvard.

Gosh, now I so wish I'd applied SCEA...it sucks not knowing when other people already know. It's something I'd do if I got to do it over again.

EDIT: I debate too. Not all debate is reading cards at insanely fast speeds - just policy. There's also parliamentary debate, where presentation matters, and you can't show up in just a T-shirt. Although its new on the high school scene (has been big on college scene though). There's also student congress and all that fun fun stuff...

Haven't heard much about debate helping. I debate for a community college near my hs (thus on college circuit called NPDA where UCLA, Berkeley, Claremont compete, and Stanford sort of dabbles). Also legacy. We'll see where that takes me...

wait....does harvard give legacy to kids whose parents went to harvard GRAD school? just curious...
