Im currently a freshman in high school. Im intrested in attending Stanford or an Ivy league college. My problem is that Im unsure of how my freshman grades will affect my chances. The first semester I didnt do as well as I could've and Im currently in my second semester and so far I have straight A's. Here are my grades for the first semester: My GPA (un)3.4 w(4.08) I'm ranked 218 out of 803(I know I need to get that way up)
Spanish 2: B
World Geography Honors:B+
Biology Honors: B
Algebra:B
Orchestra:A
English:A
Eurythmics(colorguard):A
Next year I'm taking:
International Relations Honors
Spanish 4 Honors
Financial Operations Honors
AP World History
English 2 Honors
Geometry
Chemistry Honors
I'm currently in colorguard(marching band) and I am aware that I need more ECs. Next year, Im gonna be in DECA, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Social Studies Honor Society. And yes, I am actually intrested in all of these. I'm also gonna start a club, volunteer in my community(library, museum, hospital). So my question is if I hurt my chances at one of these schools. Im also wondering if since Pre-Calc is the highest math I'll be able to take in high school if it will affect my chances either. If I can I'm going to try to take Calc online my senior year to increase my chances. I've also heard that it helps that im a minority(black) but I'm not relying on that at all because it may not be true and Im still gonna do my best.

I’m going to be clear and honest, and not going to sugarcoat this response.

As of now, with a 3.4 GPA and a 27% class rank with no special ECs, I would have to say that you have absolutely no chance of admittance to Stanford, no matter what your SAT score would be.

That being said, you’re a freshman, not a junior. You have a chance to get that GPA up, be active in your extracurricular, and destroy the SAT/SATIIs/ACT. Anything’s possible for a freshman right now. If your goal is admittance to Stanford, one of the leading academic institutions in both this country and the world, you’re going to have to literally work your ass off. Your acceptance is definitely not impossible; nothing really is as a freshman. But it’ll largely depend on how much effort you put in. If you don’t put the effort in, obviously you won’t have a chance. My school, which sent five people to Stanford last year, didn’t have a single person accepted to Stanford this year. The valedictorian of the senior class, with a 4.0 GPA, 2300+ on the SAT, and multiple extracurriculars, got rejected from Stanford (he did get into Harvard though).

TL;DR: Your current stats are far from Stanford level, but you are a freshman, and anything is possible. Put your effort into it, and who knows, you might achieve your goals.

Your chances are extremely low friend. Read the above response and take heed of everything he has said.

Thanks for your honest answer. I know I will definately have to put in alot of work to get to my goal. As for my low math course, do you think that will affect my chances?

My question is why’re you interested in attending an Ivy League, or Stanford, specifically?

^What he said is the truth.
Don’t think about going to an Ivy/Stanford just because it’s an Ivy/Stanford. If you really like the school, you’re going to need to improve, but there’s no shame in setting your sights a bit lower if the only reason you want to go to the aforementioned schools is prestige only.

Someone else might know this for sure, but from Stanford’s perspective I think you had a 3.2 unweighted GPA your first sememster. I don’t think Stanford counts either orchestra or colorguard in calculating your GPA.

I think people are getting overboard…you’re just a freshman. Actually, if you work your butt off and your gpa steadily increases, that upward trend will give you a significant advantage. Just work hard, be REALLY involved in school and your community, have killer SAT/ACT scores (SAT over 2200 and ACT over 32), I think you’ll have a shot. Don’t give up, and good luck!

Stanford doesn’t count frosh grades in their decisions. Try harder in the coming years.

haha, I’m still laughing at the guy who said he literally had to work his butt off. I’m not exactly sure what that would be like but it sounds painful.

But dido what everyone else said. Work hard. Also, I would get off this site until you are at least a junior. I don’t mean that in a mean way, since I’m sure you have a lot to contribute and say and you seem like a nice person. But I think stressing about this stuff for four years will slowly drive you crazy.

Just work hard. If you don’t get in, you don’t get in. Just make sure you do literally everything in your power to make yourself the best applicant you can be to Stanford.

I got 2 B’s freshman year and a B sophomore year (in honors classes). I believe Stanford doesn’t look at freshman year GPA, so that could help.

If you are serious about attending, though, make sure you show an upward trend in grades and try to get to the top 10% of your class - the higher the better
