Stanford Summer Engineering Academy

I got an email from Stanford about this program:

SSEA is an intensive learning experience that seeks to improve and sustain the diversity of engineering and science students. The program runs August 7th to September 2nd, 2005, on the Stanford campus and serves 30-40 incoming freshmen. Tenured faculty from the School of Engineering, the School of Earth Sciences, and the School of Humanities and Sciences are the teachers. All living expenses for the participants are covered. We expect this program to benefit you by providing:

_An early introduction and opportunity to work with several key faculty members from engineering, math, and science (including Biomechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Management Science and Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics, and Mechanical Engineering);
_Opportunities to experience engineering and science through collaborative learning in an intellectually stimulating hands-on environment, including laboratory work and field trips;
_An orientation to the many resources offered at Stanford; and
_Opportunities to meet several of your engineering classmates prior to beginning of the academic year.

Enclosed you will find an application form for SSEA. You may also download an application at <a href="http://soe.stanford.edu/edp/programs/ssea.html%5B/url%5D%5B/quote%5D">http://soe.stanford.edu/edp/programs/ssea.html

Did everyone get this email? I suspect I got it because I put engineering as a major I was interested in on the application and I'm female. Does anyone know anything about this program? It sounds interesting.

I didn't get the letter, but i did go to the info session they had during admit weekend. As the name suggests, this program is targeted towards females and minority students (such as african americans, hispanics, etc.) in engineering. I'm not sure if non-URM male students can apply though

Yeah, I got it too -- physics female.
I might be interested...especially because I really would like to explore engineering. I'd never considered it before, but I went to one of those pseudo-lectures on Mechanical Engineering at Admit Weekend, and it was REALLY cool. (Plus: "MechE is just like physics...but with funding!") But then looking at the application form made me realize that it's unlikely that they would pick me -- I'm not poor, I'm not first-generation, my GRANDPARENTS (both female and male) have science PhDs. There're plenty of kids who would benefit from something like this more than I would...and I'm not sure how much I approve of the inherent bias. Plus, I'm loving my summer -- got a whole stack of math/physics/literature/philosophy to read and a "job" tutoring some friends' kids. So who knows.
