I am making my portfolio on my calligraphy works for art supplement. I personally, and my friends in Stanford as well, think calligraphy is considered as painting/drawing but I want to hear from other people who know about art supplement well. I called the art supplement office couple times and I emailed them couple times, but I couldn't talk to the right person due to the time difference ( I live in Japan).

I appreciate if you let me hear your opinion!

I assume you are talking about Chinese/Japanese calligraphy…which is considered artistic writing…if, indeed, you have extraordinary talent for this “art” form I would submit an arts supplement…especially if you have garnered any awards in your country related to your talent…

…remember, many students in China, Korea, and Japan study and practice this art in their schools…so, it would be nice to show that you are not just a typical “calligraphy student” but, a really talented calligrapher…similar to how other students of fine art and music are judged and evaluated in America and Europe…

…and, I’m sure they will be able to forward your work to someone in the Asian language department or the Art department to evaluate your works…

Thank you so much for your reply.
I have quite amount of national prizes so I hope those help me show my ability.

@cbad66901. You are welcome. And don’t forget that Stanford has earlier deadlines for those applying with Arts Supplement than other schools…and I have seen too many cases of students realizing “too late” the due date is different than those applying without supplements (for both REA and regular)…
