Actually, for the secondary school report you could have the dean fill it out. Then again, I’m guessing not that many people are close to the dean… I was thinking about this one day so I called S up to ask them about who could fill it out and they said it as long as its a school official who knows you well and has access to your grades then it’s fine. It doesn’t necessarily have to be your high school counselor.

im a freshman at wharton thinking about applying as a transfer to stanford. will i be at an advantage or a disadvantage by coming from an ivy league school?

I worry about that as well. Well I go to Cal but I see your concern since nearly half of Stanford’s transfers tend to be from CCs rather than four year colleges. They’re not going to hold you accountable for it though so you should give it a shot anyway. I know a girl who transfered from Harvard to Stanford her sophomore year and another girl who transferred from Columbia. It’s very possible.

Sigh. Why is it that both Cal and Stanford have these policies of giving preference to CC transfers… I guess Cal I can understand a little more, since it’s a UC and probably should help out the residents of CA… but Stanford? Really now?

rachel909, instead of going to a dean or a high school counselor, can we get a high school teacher to fill the rec out? I didn’t know my high school counselors…

We also need a rec from a college dean, right? I don’t even know what a dean is, to be honest…so, what’s the purpose of having a dean write a rec if they don’t even know you?

if your high school teacher has access to your grades then it should probably be fine although i would call and ask just in case. also, keep in mind that he/she would also have to fill out a section about you in comparison to your fellow classmates like how demanding your coursework was compared to other students and what percentile you were in. i mention that because it’s usually registrars, principals, deans, and counselors who have access to that information. i don’t know if a teacher will be able to obtain it. as for the rec from the college dean, i’m not completely sure how that works yet. at my school i can’t even meet with a college dean unless i have an approved reason. these reasons often tend to be something major too like a request to withdraw or be readmitted after dismissal. and now that i think about it, even if i did want to meet with a dean, what would i discuss? that’s what advisers are for, so basically, no one ever even comes into contact with the dean here. i still haven’t contacted Stanford about it but i’m really hoping that an adviser could fill out the college official’s report. technically an adviser is a college official and they do have access to your coursework and grades. i’m sure that it’s also somewhat challenging to get a personal report from them but i can guarantee that it’ll be more personal than one from a dean. although the documents we have to submit appear to have pretty precise directions as to who can fill them out, they do seem to be flexible in one way or another. afterall, we want to get documents that are going to represent us well and make us stand out, not impersonal documents that are submitted merely because they need to be submitted. it’s like you said, what’s the purpose of having someone write you a rec if they don’t even know you?

according to previous stanford xfer threads,i think the rec from the college dean is nothing more than a “sign-off” where the dean acknowledges that you’re mantaing a passable GPA and staying out of trouble…anyone who knows others please correct me. I think the LORs from your college instructors would be a lot more in-depth, which i think you wanted in your previous post.

bump !

still no one out there?

One of my dream schools, I can only wish about going here. Maybe LS after undegrad.

hey do you guys know if we can submit the midterm report from the common app? i noticed that it was in the school forms section for transfers. i looked at stanford’s site and apparently it’s not required, but i still think if i submitted it it could really give me a boost.

I noticed so many have applied for Stanford. Only advise I give… don’t wait for Stanford to accept you - apply to other uni - still Stanford is must uni - set your goal for Stanford grad school…

Is transfer admission at Stanford need blind?

I’d love to go here, and though I’ve got a near 4.0 and SAT scores above 2200, I still know it’s impossible to get in as a transfer. I really just don’t feel like it’s worth the effort, when I could spend the same effort applying to a school I can actually get into… anyways, just my view, not intending to discourage anyone. I’m pretty sure the only way you’re going to get in is if you have a damn good reason for applying. I don’t think good grades/scores are going to cut it.

I mean, I just looked at the app and there’s not much of a “why Stanford” essay or anything… so I don’t think you need a super compelling reason… that’s Yale

^^ @seaboard isn’t essay number 3 “tell us what makes Stanford a good place for you” essentially the “why stanford” essay? I’ve gotten the sense that its the essay that will either make or break you.

@mojavemocha I agree. Out of all the questions I saw on the application, that one stood out. I think it is the crux of the application. So I ask myself that same question. I don’t know why. haha

I am currently applying to Georgetown, NYU, Columbia, and Cornell as a junior transfer. Knowing my stats below and what I am about to do, do you think I would have a shot at Stanford?
- 3.75 at UCSB in a double major of Business Economics with emphasis in Accounting and Political Science.
- Applying for Political Science or Goverment when transferring
-Internships with Deloitte, Wells Fargo and Wachovia.
-Researcher for a NSF 5 year project emphasized on the internets impact of social movements and political protests. - Head of University Misconduct in the Office of the Student Advocate. Those not familiar with this department, it helps students defend their cases when charged with violations i.e. cheating. It also helps mediate any situation that a student may have encountered with authorities at UCSB.
-Part of a Political Science research team focused on the impacts of Facebook when it comes to political knowledge v political participation.
-There are plenty of other things I have done, but these are the main ones.

My high school GPA is a weighted 4.0 while taking 6 AP classes. My SAT is a 1980 (Math 720 Writing 680 Reading 580), SAT II BIO 790 and SAT II MATH 720. My ACT score is a 30.

Also, I am looking to take my next two quarters off to go for a self-discovery experience. I am going to be in a Global Peace Corps program known as Buddhist Immersion. Here I will be teaching English to children and monks who wish to become multilingual lectures across the globe. I will also be attending many mediation retreats and living in the monastery.

SFwarrior, yeah. Its the simplest question with the most difficult answer.
Quite frankly, I have some very personal reasons for wanting to go to Stanford, but its difficult to see whether or not they’ll find it compelling enough to admit me as one of the “Chosen 23” (lol). My stats aren’t intimidating at all & at times I’m wondering if the $90 app fee is even worth it.
