Stanford vs University of Texas at Austin for pursuing PhD in Petroleum Engineering

Hi

I have been accepted at Stanford University as well as UT Austin for PhD in Petroleum Engineering. I have to decide between the two.

My main future objective after completing my Phd is to enter oil industry in R&D jobs.

As per the US News Rankings both Stanford and UT Austin are tied at No.1 in the field of Petroleum Engineeing.

Where shall I join then ?

If they’re tied, then go to Stanford. They have a much higher level of prestige, a much nicer campus, and even a nice place for you to land internships via Silicon Valley. But it’s really up to you. Definitely visit both colleges first.

Stanford does have great prestige, but if you think of oil, it’s pretty big in Texas and you’d be able to easily get a job. But definitely visit them both first and talk with professors if you can.

Is this for an undergraduate degree or for a PhD program? If it is for a PhD, then you need to re-post this question in the Grad School Forum. The people there are more likely to have useful ideas for you.

Petroleum Engineering is a very specific field. You need to find out where graduates of these two programs end up.
