Hey guys,
just wondering if it is common/possible/realistic to start a club as a freshman? I want to start a social running club (would be pretty easy to maintain) and I have a good idea of HOW to start it, but don't know WHEN it is appropriate.

If I were to decide now, I would start it 2nd semester of my freshman year. Is that too early? Any insight would be appreciated :)

There’s no rule against freshmen starting clubs in their first semester. I’ve seen it happen, just not very much. Might be a good way to meet people with shared interests early on!

However, I can also see that waiting a semester might have a few advantages. You could personally recruit the first few members (friends of yours?) and get a hang of the campus: how do clubs advertise themselves, where are the good running routes, etc?

I started a club when I was a first year transfer student. I was a junior but was as good as a freshman to the school. It was fun and it made no difference that I was new to the school. However, I started it during the second semester when fewer people were actively out looking for clubs, and I think I might have done better that first year if we had started in the Fall. That said, in the Fall I was just starting at a new school and had a lot on my plate, and didn’t know anybody to help me yet, so I maybe should have waited until Fall of the second year. Food for thought.

Maybe you could get a few people to commit to an informal running club, or you could start it early? either way, id get a couple of freinds to commit, and ask them to spread the word!
