Starting an college application essay

I am currently in the process of trying to start my essays, but I am having trouble getting my thoughts down.

I want to write about how I have overcome Crohns and now it positively influences my life.

What is the best way to get a essay going? Also, do you have DO's and DONT's for a topic such as this?

Just write.

Mars is right. I write for a living, and when I don’t know how to get started, I stop worrying and stop pre-editing myself, and just write whatever I’m thinking. Just get it all on paper. You’ll get into it, and once you’re done, you can go back and edit. By then you’ll have a better feel for how you want to approach your subject.

One suggestion. People always say show, don’t tell. A good way to do that is to start out with an anecdote - some key situation or moment that shows a turning point or expresses your main point. That can be a very good way for you to get into writing, and a good way to get your reader interested from the beginning.
