Hi everyone,
I just found out about this lovely site today and I was wondering if any of you guys would know the question to my predicament.
I went to university out of state in NJ for a year but ran out of money. For three years after that I worked, went to the army, and tried my hands at trade school. I’ve decided to go back to community college in hopes of transferring to a UC. However, I messed around my first year of college, not thinking that I would be changing schools. Most of the classes were Philosophy and Journalism oriented because of my then major but I am going to be changing majors to Computer Science. I did take two gen ed classes and got C’s in both of them. Will this hurt me or is there a way around it?
Nope, you have to provide a true and complete record of your university classes. If you lie, they will catch you.
However, you have a space to mention on your app that those classes are X years old, and you’ve matured, learned and grown since that time as demonstrated by your current record and service, etc. I don’t believe that they will hold you back.
^^agree. They have a lot of aid for military but I think you need to use it within 3 years of active service (not sure). If your earlier grades are D’s or Fs you could see about academic renewal, which will erase them; or repeat them, if applicable; or just “soldier” on. B-)
The UCs like vets, so buckle down and get the GPA up, and you stand a good shot.
@lindyk8 I certainly hope you’re right about the vets thing, I as well am not the stellar 4.0, never seen anything but an A student.
@Janeylala I say keep giving it your all and try. People have gotten into UC’s even though gasp they weren’t perfect. Head up.
@QueSeraSera04 It’s true, but you know you have to be bringing something to the party. 8-}
Not all UC transfer students are 4.0, BTW.
go to a CC campus near you and make appointments to talk to some of the advisors and counselors. They may have an advisor that works specifically with returning vets. You also want to talk to a xfer counselor to get a better handle on what will happen with those earlier classes, and how they affect you.
I’m a veteran as well and have been haunted by some 10 year old grades that were from a very different time in my life.
Some won’t transfer and some I’m retaking with the hopes of the UC using my new grade. On the UC transfer planner, I’m able to select that the new class I’m taking is to make up for the old grade, so hopefully that works as it sounds.
The good news is that you can show the UC’s a “new” version of you. One who is now disciplined and who has made their education a priority. If you work hard and determined, the “old” you and the “new” you will be very apparent to them on paper and that’s what’s important.
