Starting The Process...

Hello! So I will be being my senior year this year and I'm planning on majoring in Acting. I am a female who attends a public school. I leave at 11:30 everyday and take a pre-college musical theatre program from 1:30-5. I did this my junior year as well. I take dance, singing, acting, voice and speech, and audition prep classes. I also have taken private voice for the past four years. I don't want to major in MT because I like straight acting much better. However, most of my training and experience is in MT. Before the pre college program, I had only taken two years of dance and three years of acting classes at a small local theatre. I been a part of various musicals, but have only had one strong lead role, I plan on doing more this year before auditions begin. I think training wise I am strong, but my experience may hinder me. I have a 3.8 weighted GPA and my SAT scores are around 1690. I plan on taking the SATS again, as well as the ACTs and some SAT subject tests. I am also in all honors/AP classes at school and in NHS. In addition to school and training, I do volunteer work and have a part time job. The schools I am looking at are:
NYU
Point Park
Penn State
UNCSA
UCLA
USC
Chapman
Marymount Manhattan
Pace
Boston U
Conn College

Maybes:
Emerson
Fordham
American
Hartt
Syracuse
Sarah Lawrence

I know that the programs are extremely difficult to get into, but last year I got to view a lot of my fellow pre-college classmates go through this process, so I feel like I know what I am in for. I also want to apply to some more non audition schools, but am having trouble finding schools. I am currently in the process of gathering required audition information about all of the schools and beginning to put together my monologues list. I want to have around ten-twelve to work on in September with my acting teacher when my classes start up again. Should I hire another private monologue coach for this? My class is small and often we have up to 30-45 minutes of one-on-one instruction where he will help us with our monologues. Are there any schools that I should look at or maybe schools that I should move to the for sure list or any more information I will need as I begin this process. Thanks so much!

Missj212, I don’t think your MT background will hinder you. Plenty of students who apply to Acting programs have most of their experience in MT.

The most critical thing is the audition!

Whether or not you work with a private monologue coach might depend on whether your acting teacher is very familiar with the college audition process. Many students find it extremely helpful to work with someone who has a lot of experience helping students prepare for college auditions.

There are some recent threads on this forum on non audition programs that should help you.

well, for some of these schools (esp. Tisch), your SAT scores are going to make it extraordinarily difficult for you to get in. I hope you will really study and practice to get that score up!!

I"m not sure why you would bother with a private coach if you are already getting one-on-one instruction, unless you don’t respect your teacher. Many of the colleges want to see who YOU are – not just how you’ve been coached. Some will ask you to do your monologue a completely different way right on the spot! At one of the auditions, my D was given a totally different context for where she was and who she was speaking to, and had to repeat it that way.
