State Colleges with accessible Merit Scholarships for International

Indian Male Student.
Major: Biochemistry SAT: 1480 GPA: 4.0 (UW) EC: @10 including starting an NGO, Teaching assistant for high schoolers, Math club founder at school, Basketball coach at school etc.

There are some state schools which consider international students for scholarships. For example University of Missouri and University of Alabama have automatic scholarships based on GPA and SAT/ACT. Are there any other state schools which give partial or full tuition scholarships to international students? If one wants to keep total cost of attendance (COA) below 30K what would be suggestions?

You will need to check…but I’m pretty sure University of New Mexico does @WayOutWestMom can verify.

Also, check Utah, Montana.

Thanks!

Yes. Look at state schools in TX, Indiana, Florida. Frankly, with a budget of $30K (I assume), you will have many options.
Schools in TX will be particularly appealing as you can get an OOS tuition waiver with as little as $1000 in scholarship money. So, your COA should be well below $30K. OOS for most Florida state schools is close to $30K. Look at Florida International.

Does this apply to UT-Austin? I didn’t think it did.

Great! Thanks for a broad list to look at.

In any case it might be difficult to get a merit scholarship in a reach school for given profile.

Yes U of Alabama has amazing of automatic scholarships! We are bit worried about suitability of the place for a colored international. Mizzou also has some but the amount is limited to 10k for an automatic for international.

Certainly a personal decision based on comfort level. Good luck.

Not all schools in TX but certainly Texas Tech, A&M and several smaller state schools provide this benefit although the amount required to qualify for a waiver varies between schools. More selective schools require a higher scholarship amount. I believe A&M is $4000.

The campus is extremely diverse with ~60% of students coming from OOS. Your assumptions might well be off the mark here. Just to give you an example, during our local open house for Alabama, one of the alums invited as a speaker turned out to be African American. What I found more fascinating was that his father went to Alabama as well. He had nothing but good things to say about the school.

OP isn’t out of state they are a foreign
national from India. UA has a 3% non resident alien population (from the entire world) and a 1.5% Asian population (inclusive of all US citizens identifying from any of the 48 Asian countries).

Again comfort and diversity is subjective but I don’t think domestic US geographic diversity particularly applicable to OP.

Thanks much for this comforting message. We are most concerned about the safety rather than diversity. I completely agree that our impressions are mainly based history and news media which could be far from reality. Will definitely consider it in the final list.

Have you looked at u of Arizona ?

Totally agree. However just from diversity perspective many liberal colleges are not diverse either. At the end of it all, it iss a leap of faith that one has to take when you are a nonresident alien so to say

I might add miami Ohio seems to give decent scholarships.

But there are also lower tuition schools where it might be better than higher cost with merit. Southern Illinois. Alabama Huntsville. W Carolina. I’m just looking at finances. Only you can determine fit.

My kid goes to Bama. He’s not experienced safety concerns. If you’re drunk and stupid then sure anywhere. Tuscaloosa isn’t the nicest down and like any city there is violence but he’s never felt unsafe. The university is considered very nice and there are nice river walks nearby.

I think fit can be an issue for international students at many schools - it’s hard to integrate people by race, by nationality. Having 20 or 30k kids together, even a diverse crowd, doesn’t necessarily mean proper integration. You will see separation of groups on the campus just like I see at work, etc.

You might Che k out low cost privates too. York U of Pa and both Hofstra and Bradley pay heavy. Not sure if for international. Do their NPCs.
