For those who go to/looking into in-state public schools, did you or someone you know ever had to apply for residency? I’m interested in an in-state public school (Purdue) and I live in state, but I go to school out of state (Kentucky), and will automatically be marked out of state when I apply. Therefore, I would have to appeal for residency the summer before my freshman year. Has anybody gone through something like this with any state schools? How was your success?
Doesn’t it depend on where your parents are living and paying taxes?
Yes but because we moved there quite recently (June after sophomore year), I know Purdue may deny the appeal because they may think we moved for the purpose to get in-state
You need to take this issue up directly with Purdue. The people there are the only ones who can give you a clear answer.
I had to fill out a form to get a resident grant. Everyone who wants one has to fill it out, and it does ask if you’ve lived there at least 5 years (I hadn’t) but it is not a big deal. I had to list the date we moved there, the date I got a license, etc.
June after sophomore years will still give you 2 full years before starting college. I don’t think it will be a problem. Kids who live near a border often go to school in another state (PA into NJ or DE; NY into NJ). Some kids also go to boarding schools. They still get state residency for tuition.
I have. I know how the process works. I was asking, if you read the post, I was asking about success stories.
Yeah for us it only asks for the past two years so we’re waiting until probably July to appeal. Purdue is super stingy on residency but many colleges around where I’m from (University of Louisville, Cincinnati, Indiana University - Southeast) give in state tuition to Kentucky students (or Southern Indiana is U of L’s case).
You’ve made this a general question but anyone’s experience with any state other than Indiana or university besides Purdue will have nothing to do with what may happen to you. Good luck.
I know, but many state schools have similar protocols. I have not heard much from the Purdue community, so it was worth a shot to post it here.
