A college I am applying to requires me to send a "statement of residency status". What is this statement? Isn't that my ID - after all it is an official document stating my citizenship.
I am really left quite confused and would be thankful to anyone who assists me with my problem. :)

It must be a public university. They’re asking if you’re a resident of their state. If you need a visa, skip the question.

It’s actually a private LAC - Skidmore College. It’s stated on their website that they require this statement to be included with the other admission application files.

It’s not about your citizenship; it’s about your legal status or proposed legal status in the US. The full statement reads as follows: “All applicants who are not U.S. citizens must include a statement of their visa or residency status together with their admissions application form. This is required by the U.S. government for both international students and noncitizens already residing in the U.S.” If you are already in the US, you need to explain what visa you hold or disclose that you hold a green card. If you are outside the US, you need to explain how you plan to enter the country–e.g., pursuant to a student or other type of visa.

So I have to include with my application a letter to Skidmore in which I state that I plan on being in the USA on a student visa (F1 or whatever it was) provided that i get in?

Yes. That should do it.

F1 is the normal student visa status.
