How hard is stats 134 if i haven't taken any stats classes (e.g. 20, 21, etc) here at Cal? The pre-req for the class is just math 1a-b so I want to know if it's doable without much stats background. thanks!

what are you taking it for w/o 20 or 21, for fun?

stats 134 was the first stat class i’ve ever taken in my life and i did fine. Stats 20/21 isn’t necessary.

The material for Stat 134 is by no means trivial. The difficulty will also vary depending on the professor teaching the class. I took it with Prof Klass and we used the Hoel, Port and Stone Probability book which imo is not as good an introductory text to probability as Pitman’s book which the other 134 classes were using. But Prof Klass was very generous with the grading so that was nice. If you search the CC forums, you can find previous threads about stat 134 as well.

I took stat 21 before taking stat 134 and other than basic probability stuff (permutations and combinations which most people should probably already be familiar with even if they have never taken a stats class before) there is no overlap in material between the 2 classes. You should be familiar with multiple/double integrals (covered in Math 53 but you can easily figure out how it works) and working with series/summations (covered in Math 1B).
