Decision: Accepted
Major: Film Production
Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 690 Math, 710 Reading, 740 Writing - 2130 Cum
[] SAT IIs: 700 U.S. Hist., 700 Math Lv. II, 760 Literature
[] GPA: 3.78 w, not sure of unw, 4.0 on Chapman’s scale (sophomore-junior year only, weighting 8 honors/AP classes)
[] Rank: 31/445, but I was below top 10% when I applied
[] Other stats: 5 on AP U.S. History exam, 4 on English Lang, 4 on Art History
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I’m a good writer and had a lot of people look over them, so I think they were decent at least. As for the video essay, mine was not my best work, and it didn’t much “tell a story” the way previous applicants recommended that it should.
[] Teacher Recs: nothing negative, but pretty boring I’d expect. Got a good one from my Television Production class teacher, who is an alumni of Chapman film.
[] Counselor Rec: one great one from my first academic counselor and another from the one at my new school, who doesn’t know me as well.
[] Hook (if any): …not that I know of.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Texas
[] School Type: public, not competitive, rarely sends graduates to top schools.
[] Ethnicity: white
[li] Gender: female[/li][/ul]Other Factors/Hook?: moved from a competitive Catholic high school in Orange County, CA in the middle of my junior year. Chapman would know that school’s reputation well because many graduates apply there. Also, taking seven AP classes this year. Visited Chapman and Dodge College this summer (they said they keep a record of who visits).
General Comments: I really thought changing schools would mess up my chances, because my transcript didn’t look as stellar afterward. Guess it turned out okay ^_^

**Decision: ACCEPTED **
Major: Film Production with a minor in Advertising
Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2010
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT IIs: N/A
[] GPA: uw 3.9; w 4.02 (I think…)
[] Rank: N/A (my school doesn’t rank)
[] Other stats: 8 A’s and 1 B in my 9 IB courses
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Chapman essay was about making the finals in a prestigious poetry contest; Dodge essay was a dream about my dream job in which I compared being a director to being the conductor of an orchestra. My film essay was the most painful process I have ever been through. I made the film way ahead of schedule in October but when I showed it to people, they said that it didn’t tell them anything about me. Sooo, with two weeks left before the application was due, I started all over with a new film. Thankfully, the criticism had been well-founded as my second film (I think) came out much better than the first. The audio levels are screwed up because my camera broke and couldn’t record audio and I had to ADR everything, but Chapman said that they cared more about the story than about the technological skill involved.
[] Teacher Recs: My IB Theory of Knowledge teacher loved me, so while I don’t know what she wrote specifically, I know that she wrote two pages full of something wonderful; the Creative recommendation was actually written by Harry Cheney, who is a film professor at Chapman. I had worked with him this summer and he had gotten to know me well enough that he could write about my creative talents. Also, I’m sure it was a plus that Harry wrote the letter for his own school :stuck_out_tongue:
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor was also my IB English and IB Theatre teacher. She knows me very well, which is both good and bad because I know that she knows several of my more shameful flaws…but I got in so I guess she wrote positive things about me!
[] Hook (if any): Well, the first line of my Chapman essay began with me telling my parents that I was pregnant. Then, the second paragraph reveals that the poem I performed in the above mentioned competition was about a woman giving her newly born child up for adoption.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Atlanta, Georgia
[] School Type: International Baccalaureate at Public school (but I transferred sophomore year from a private school)
[] Ethnicity: white and badly in need of a California tan :stuck_out_tongue:
[] Gender: female
[/ul]Other Factors/Hook?: my short films are playing at a film festival next month. Does that count? Oh, and this past summer I spent two weeks at Chapman and Dodge as part of an intensive film program.
General Comments: over and out! (I hope all this formating worked!)

Also, another hook is that I am very active in community service. I work with refugees who come from camps in Bhutan and Nepal. My mother and I started an aid organization made up of about 50 or so volunteers from around the Atlanta area. We work with volunteer translators but are picking up a bit on Nepali ourselves. We bring clothing, blankets, food, school supplies, toys for little kids, that sort of thing. But our biggest project is for fellow high school students. We have a massive drive to collect used computers (even old clunky ones from the 90s) and set them up so that each teen can type their school work. the rational behind this is that if education is easy at home, they will do better in school, thus will have the chance to go to college, and then get a job that will pay for a family, and so on and so forth until their generations are no longer handicapped by eighteen years of being trapped in a third world refugee camp.

Decision: ACCEPTED!
Major: Graphic Design with a minor in Advertising
Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1670
[] ACT: n/a
[] SAT IIs: n/a
[] GPA: 3.35
[] Rank: 198 out of 409
[] Other stats: 4 IB courses, 1 math course through BYU, 1 math course through PSU, TONS of community service for cancer related charities and organizations , 4 year experienced rower (crew), Relay for Life committee member
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: My Chapman Essay was about my experience with cancer through my point of view during a recent event. I am a very good writer, and I also had this peer edited by four very qualified adults and teachers, as well as many friends. I began working on this essay during the middle of my summer vacation. For my supplemental Art Essay, I wrote about my experience the first time I was exposed to Graphic Design last year and how I had discovered a raw talent that I never knew I had.
[] Teacher Recs: Two AMAZING teacher recs. One from my math teacher, who I respect more than anyone. She wrote about how I am not the best in math, but my attitude and character shine through and enables me to do well in anything I put my mind too. Also killer rec from my Graphic Design/Yearbook teacher
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor REALLY likes me. We have a great connection, and I made it a point to meet her the first day of Freshmen year. She wrote an amazing rec from what she has told me, and I believe her. She was almost more excited when I got accepted than I was!!
[] Hook (if any): I am a cancer survivor, and I used that traumatic experience to write my essay. It was basically through my eyes from an event that occurred during a Survivor’s Lap when I saw this little girl who was about my age when I was battling cancer. I basically explained my thoughts when I saw the girl and related them to my own struggles.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Washington, USA. (Originally from Orange, CA; moved to Washington sophomore year)
[] School Type: One of the top ranked public high schools in Washington. Very competitive student body, where practically everyone takes one or more IB classes.
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[/ul]Other Factors/Hook?: I applied Early Action. Two Chapman admissions counselors know me by name. I also had a very successful interview with the art department. I am in love with Chapman and it was (and is) my number one school. So I made it a point to go out of my way to attend every event they hosted that was practical to me. I submitted my entire application and art supplement in October. I also flew down for Discover Chapman Day in November and had my art portfolio interview in person. Attended Chapman’s Dessert Reception in Seattle, Washington in October.
General Comments: I know I am NOT the best academic student nor the best test taker, and I am kind of on the low average for Chapman. I think what won them over was that I proved the type of person I am to them. I work harder than really anyone I know, and things do indeed take a while for me. Once I reach a goal, however, I am at the very top. For those of you who are like me and have less than ‘average’ academic scores- dont despair! Show them who you are, at Chapman, character is worth more than any GPA or SAT score you can receive! Otherwise I dont think I would have gotten in! :)

That’s an awesome story, muhlissa. I am so happy that you got in!!

I want to encourage anyone who got a decision, yes or no, to post on this thread. The one last year was so helpful to me in making sure how to appeal to admissions and how to make up for something I might have been lacking. Take five minutes and get your good karma for the day :)

How about also posting merit scholarship money if applicable. It really helps others see what the $$ trends/standards are at Chapman…

great idea caseyatbat!

I got my merit aid packet today and I got an 18,000 chancellor’s scholarhship!

congrats esther!!!
I’ll post my aid offer as soon as it comes. But I haven’t even gotten my ‘letter’ yet so it might be a while.

thanks so much eileen! it came in the mail yesterday! i wasn’t expecting it at all but it was very exciting because i got a financial aid packet from emerson which was my other choice school and they gave me a lousy package so when i opened up chapman and saw the scholarship i was thrilled!!

they said they sent it out in the mail thursday. so the people in california would have gotten it friday. i live in atlanta (big city) so mine got delivered on saturday. if you live close to a city you should get your letter tomorrow. if not, then certainly the day after.

but i’m stoked now!

My daughter was ACCEPTED into the BFA Creative Writing Program. She has a 4.84 GPA, Class Rank; Co-Val and 1300/1920 SAT’s. She is also a full IB diploma candidate. She received the Presidential Scholarship of $23K per year. Chapman is a beautiful school in a really beautiful, quaint little part of Orange.
Good Luck to all! :)

congrats to you and your D, Momto4. Hope we see her there in the fall!

wait, esther, does that mean they sent you your scholarhsip before your acceptance letter?because that would be great news for me, I wanna be put out of my misery as soon as possible :P

Major:Film Production
Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1890
[] ACT: 31
[] SAT IIs: 670 in Biology, 640 in U.S. History
[] GPA: 4.0 weighted
[] Rank: Top third of the class (around 28/100ish)
[] Other stats: 4 on AP English, 3’s on AP US History and AP Bio, taking 3 more APs this year
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I’m a pretty good essay writer, and I took a LOT of time on my Chapman essays. My writing style is a bit different because I tend to write creatively even in my formal essays.
[] Teacher Recs: I have no idea what my teachers wrote about me, but I picked two teachers from the classes that challenged me and that I had to really work through. Also, I had a recommendation from my film teacher who knows how hard I work and knows my potential, so I’m sure he wrote me an excellent letter as well.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor knows my personality very well, and I really think that gave her the ability to write a letter that truly portrays me as I am.
[] Hook (if any): I don’t really have one, but my movie had a cute storyline and was very different from any of the application videos I have seen so far.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: California
[] School Type: Catholic, All-girls school
[] Ethnicity: White as white can be
[] Gender: Female
[/ul]Other Factors/Hook?: I don’t think I really have any special hooks. I did visit the school and talked to a professor, but I doubt he remembered me during the application process. I worked really hard on my application video and my test scores are a bit above the average for Chapman, so I believe that is why I got accepted.
General Comments: I don’t really know what else to say other than if you’re applying for film, don’t leave your film until last minute! Hard work pays off!

Spazzums, are you from Rosary? I used to go to Mater Dei :]
I’d love to see your video if it’s hosted online somewhere!

edthegurl, I’m actually from Flintridge Sacred Heard Academy. I’ve heard of Rosary though!

if you’d like to take a look at my video - [YouTube - Chapman Application Video 2009 - ACCEPTED](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zepYRyI8me4)

also, I can’t edit my stats post again, but I did receive my letter and I also was selected as a “Chancellor Scholar,” a scholarship for “academic achievement or outstanding talent” that allows me $18,000 annually for all four years. Pretty awesome if you ask me XD Has anyone else gotten this or any other scholarships??

[ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] Essays: I feel as though my essays were very strong, and I spent a lot of time on each of them. Because I was applying to the PR/A program, I was required to complete some additional essays such as evaluating an ad campaign I found effective (I choose the “I’m a Mac” ads), writing about why I wanted to do PR, and also completing a creative resume.
[ *] Teacher Recs: My teacher recs were also very good. The PR/A program also required an additional teacher rec as to why I would be good at PR. My standard teacher rec came from my freshman honors writing/senior AP English teacher, and my PR rec letter came from my junior year humanities teacher who used to live in Orange County.
[ *] Counselor Rec: My counselor happens to be a family friend who I have known for many years and who was also a sorority sister with my mom. She has been able to see me grow both literally and figuratively throughout my life so I am sure that her letter was also very strong.
[ *] Hook (if any): Possibly my departmental essays. I know that through my essays I displayed a genuine interest in PR and attending Chapman.
