i know there's no stats major at dartmouth, so what if im interested in it and still want to go to dartmouth?

theres something called a special major...would i be able to design one of these? or at least minor in stats?

also idk how close the mathematics and social sciences major is to stats...could any dmouth students speak about this?

There’s no stats minor. You would certainly be able to try to design a special major or special minor. However, there may not be enough courses to satisfy your needs. Try taking a look at the course listings (look under math, math & social sciences, and engineering sciences) and compare to the typical coursework required for a stats major at other schools.

There are the standard courses in Probability, Statistics, and Linear Models in the Math department. You can also take Econometrics and Biostatistics in the Econ and Biology departments, Data Analysis in MSS, and Machine Learning/Data Mining in the CS department. Not quite up to a standard Stat major (e.g. no ANOVA, non-parametrics, multivariate, time series, statistical computing, etc), but adequate enough in substance for what a minor would have been if one was available.

The MSS major is not really close to a Stat major, though you can do MSS and then try to supplement it with the Stat courses listed above. Same with the Math Major, though you would have to fulfil the Analysis and Algebra requirements. (On the other hand, if you want to keep open the possibility of grad school in Stat, you will want to take that Analysis anyway.)
