Some interesting stats that may be of interest to those who got denied or waitlisted from UCLA. I was just looking at Naviance stats for my kid’s high school and found out that the acceptance rates for UC Berkeley and UCLA for the last 4 or 5 years from my kid’s high school were as follows:
UC Berkeley: 50% accepted for over 200 applicants
UCLA: Only 30% accepted for over 250 applicants
Maybe kids with better stats from my kid’s high school are applying to UC Berkeley, or UCB reviews applications more holistically or UCB loves students from our kid’s high school.
@AlwaysLearning21 My bad. I was looking at the wrong tables. However, for UC Berkeley, acceptance was around 30% out of 800 students, whereas for UCLA, acceptance rate was 20% out of 1,000 students. No, further from UC Berkeley. I believe the higher acceptance rate was due to the fact that UC Berkeley looks at applications holistically but who knows?
I also noticed that every year, the number of applicants to both schools have been declining, meaning less students have been applying every year. I think this declining number of applicants reflect the fact that students and parents realize that UC admission is becoming really tough even for great students and also they are looking somewhere else.
Unfortunately, I was rejected. I thought I at least had a chance for a waitlist because my chemistry scores are strong and (I thought) my essay relating to chemistry was pretty good. I won’t lie, I’m really disappointed, but I guess there’s always grad school.
Again, thank you so much for being supportive of me from the beginning. I’m going to take some time off to think about all this and move forward.
For future applicants-- don’t lose hope after that UCLA rejection! Ya girl was rejected from UCLA (yes, rejected. not even waitlisted) and made it to Berkeley (my #1.) I received a LOR.
4.33 W 3.75 UW GPA
1430 SAT
sucky sat subject test scores. high 600s for chem and math level 2 (word of advice: don’t forget to schedule them in May/June and take them in December after you already forgot everything from junior year like I did lol)
9 AP’s and one UC approved honors (four 5’s, one 4, and four pending)
Lots of EC’s & tutoring position
Tried my best on essays, but idk

Accepted at UCSD, UCI, UCD, UCSB, Cal Poly Slo
Rejected from UCLA, USC, Cornell and probably Stanford (coming out tomorrow)
My sister was also rejected from UCLA and accepted at UCB. It’s a common trend. In the words of Childish Gambino, Stand Tall!
Stats:
1440 New SAT
4.3 GPA
Minimal EC… soccer, student government, book club, EAOP
I worked for ages in my Personal Insight Questions and was pleased with how they turned out.

Waitlisted at UCLA but accepted at UC Berkeley. I had a lot of positives going for me at UCB. EAOP is a Berkeley program, I’m a local student, and my English teacher wrote a 10/10 recommendation letter.
Honestly I’m not really euphoric as I expected. I’m just numb and surprised.
As I said, I know several kids with great stats – I mean great stats plus NMF – who got denied from MIT, UCB, UCLA at competitive majors and went to UCSD and are doing very well there. Some have already been offered great jobs before their graduation. Nicer weather than UCLA also. Well-known CA colleges with the best temperate weather are: UCSB, Stanford, UCSD, UCB and UC Irvine in that order. Weather at UCSB and Stanford are definitely cooler during the summer than UC Irvine weather, and UCSD weather is almost always several degrees below Irvine weather. So weather wise, UCSD weather is nicer than UC Irvine weather.
For location and surrounding areas (aside from weather), I would rank: UCB, Stanford, UCSD, UCSB/UC Irvine.
@websensation My small NorCal company’s mechanical engineer is a UCSD graduate and doing very well here. Enjoyed the opportunity to surf while studying.
@Undercrackers We did an official visit something like one year ago and I quickly realized, having lived in Hawaii for 10 years, that UCSD was the BEST college to attend if you are into surfing or scuba diving. Study some, surf or scuba dive some – that is a way to enjoy.
